Spanking case ends with apology from boys, judge dismisses charges.

McMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) - Two 13-year-old boys accused of slapping girls' bottoms and poking or cupping girls' breasts at school apologized on Monday as a judge dismissed charges against the two, ending a six-month case that drew national attention.

The charges triggered a debate over whether such behavior in school should be considered criminal.

Four girls listed as victims by the prosecutors had asked the judge to drop the charges against Cory Mashburn and Ryan Cornelison.

Yamhill County Judge John Collins did so on Monday, saying it was in the "interest of justice."

1. This is a good thing.

edit: By that I mean that since the girls were doing the same things, and not one girl was charged, this was just sooooooooo wrong in the first place. Sounded like most of the kids in the school participated in this touchy-feely exercise. I hope they got scared enough to understand that it was not acceptable behavior. But good grief, they were going to try to make these two boys register as sex offenders.

This whole thing was crazed. The kids had organized this day and even had a name for it, which I can't remember now.

Maybe they all learned something.

3. "Slap Butt Day"
Yeah, I agree that this is the best resolution of this case.

It doesn't mean that I think it is okay for boys to grab girls. That is really a problem, but prosecuting these boys as sex offenders was just plain wrong, when at least one of the victims admitted to participating in grabbing boys.

I really hope that the school starts this and every year with a series of lessons on appropriate touching.

2. I agree that there shouldn't be criminal charges such as prison or juvi
But I believe there should had been some punishment. Community service consisting of cleaning the school bathrooms before the school year started or during the weekend(s) when there aren't any activities.

And the school(s) where this improper touching should do a better job of supervising the students so that they don't do it again.
