I just wish we could call early elections.

Is that allowed in Canada or can the Queen nix that if she wants to? (sorry, someone tried to explain the way the Canadian system works, but it just confused me even more)

6. LOL and nope, the Queen can't do squat
We recently changed our election process, unfortunately, imo, so elections will happen every four years just like yours but, because we can have minority governments because we are a parliamentary governance system, the government can fall on "confidence" (usually financial) votes IF the opposition votes total more than the government votes.

harper is in a minority government so he has to watch what bills come up unless his poll numbers climb otherwise he will be out on his ASS!

8. That's fine, I didn't vote for him.
In fact, I don't think more than 30% of Canadians DID vote for him.

10. Are they showing The Colbert Report in Canada too?
Or do you folk just get The Daily Show?

If you don't get it yet, I know a way to get the West Coast Comedy Central feed over the internet that I could tell you aboot.

11. CTV (regular commercial channel) carries it at half-past midnight
Right after Jon Stewart's show!

(And it also airs on the Comedy Channel, our version of Comedy Central.)

14. You have a Canadian version of Comedy Central?
I want that!

What? Do they show better Comedy movies and substitute the repetitive showings of "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" for Canadian Comedians who are actually funny???

I want that too!

15. it's a mixture of domestic and US shows ...
I have to admit that some of the Canadian stuff isn't that great (the ads for that "Owl and the Man" bit are driving me bonkers). But they do air the "Just for Laughs" shows from Montreal, which helps give breaks to our performers. And there are a few Canadian groups doing political satire (Air Farce, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Rick Mercer, Comedy Inc.) that help keep things interesting.

16. Sounds pretty good to me...
...maybe this is a slight exaggeration, but it does seem like the all the best comedians we get down here are from Canada, Toronto mostly, or we get the reruns of British shows, 5 years after they originally ran.

Comedy Central has made a few good original shows lately though, but they never seem to make more than 12 shows at a time.

What is your favourite show to watch when you are 'HIGH'... on life:spray:

South Park

The Simpsons

Chappelle's Show

Just for Laughs Gags

That would never fly on Comedy Central.

13. This Canadian says -- well done, Stephen! Bien fait, Etienne!

By the way, if anyone's interested, here is a sample of Canadian political satire (equivalent show to Jon Stewart, etc.). Check out the clip from Feb 27, where Rick Mercer visits Stephen Harper -- yes, that really is him. It's kind of like Colbert's "Better Know a District" -- the politicans up here are so scared of Mercer that they don't dare refuse interview requests.

19. I'm amazed that he and Jean-René Dufort,
Edited on Wed Aug-22-07 06:33 AM by Bassic
whom is the Radio-Canada equivalent of CBC's Rick Mercer, still have jobs with crown owned television stations. :)

Well Dufort may or may not be ont the way out, but mostly because of decreasing ratings, after like 8 years on the air.

20. it's bizarre, isn't it! Both the CBC and BBC have some pretty sharp satire
(remember the British "Spitting Image" series with the puppets?)

And also public affairs programming, like "The Fifth Estate" on CBC.

They are government-funded networks. Meanwhile, the US commercial networks (which in theory don't have to worry about annoying the agencies and politicians who might cut off funding) have not been exercising their supposed freedom, nearly as much.

22. We've got a lot of really stupid people down here, most of whom compost the vast majority...
...of the "I ain't gonna pay for 'the Cable T.V.' when I can get it for Free with these here Rabbit-ears antennas..." crowd who just don't "get" Satire, and they especially don't "get" the really good Satire and the CEOs of the "entertainment" Corporations know it. The mega-corp CEOs down here know that they can keep shoveling out the same old Cow Crap shows like "The Apprentice" and "American Idol" and the non-Cable audience will never even notice the difference.

Plus, I heard a L.A. Comedy Writer on the Public Radio show "Marketplace" explain another major aspect of the problem, and it sounded about as logical as any I've heard.

He said that because even a 1200 square foot house in Los Angeles is (or was up until about 6 months ago before the "L.A. housing bubble" popped) going for almost One MILLION U.S. Dollars, Hollywood writers have been forced to take just about every stupid sitcom idea that comes along, because if they don't (if they turn it down for a better idea to come along) about 10 other Hollywood writers, who also need the money to pay the mortgage on their MILLION Dollar L.A. Cracker-box house, WILL take it, even if it is a really stupid idea for a sit-com.

Right now (or at least this was true 6 to 12 months ago) a few Mega-Corporations in a race to the bottom of the quality Television barrel. And in this situation, everyone loses.
