Do the Right Thing

We've seen any number of surveys saying how low the Congressional approval rating is right now. We can argue what it means until the cows come home (or the chickens come home to roost), and it won't accomplish much in the long run.

The corporate media and the propagandists would like us to believe it's because of the public perception of "partisan bickering" on the Hill. Those of us here believe it's because they haven't taken a strong stance against the Bush Administration now when its own approval ratings are nothing short of abysmal.

In the end it doesn't matter. We didn't elect these people to stick their toes in the water to check the temperature. The Dems won this last election cycle because Americans didn't like the direction this country was headed.

Right now Cindy Sheehan is menacing Nancy Pelosi in California, planning to run against her in the next election. Now whatever you may think of Cindy at this point, it can be said that this is a symptom of the frustration many of us feel when we think of hearing the words "impeachment is off the table."

Now John Conyers, who was also menaced by Cindy, has stated outright that, for him, impeachment is "not" off the table, whether Pelosi agrees or not.

The Republican Party has been, for all intents and purposes, more or less indistinguishable from either the mafia or the now-defunct Soviet Communist Party. Party loyalty means more to them than service to America and Americans. It's as plain to us as the noses on our faces. The only reason the rest of America isn't so certain is because the corporate media has been carrying their water for the past several years.

In blind taste tests, or the political equivalent, the American People have resoundingly shown support for generally "leftist" positions on the issues--on healthcare, on the war, on taxation and representation.

So what, precisely, is Congress waiting for? More gift-wrapped scandals to further consternate the Republican attack machine? Larry Flynt? Or are they just hoping that the American people's growing disgust with the state of affairs will result in a telling victory next year?

The American people don't have an unlimited supply of patience. They need to see positive action to change the way things are going, and as long as the Democrats are hiding in their foxholes rather than taking the battle to their enemy, people are going to grow increasingly disaffected.

It's time to Do the Right Thing. Even if it hurts a little. The alternative is to do nothing, or, at best, grant the appearance of doing nothing. And that will hurt a LOT.

until 30 or 40 congressional republicans openly oppose the president, nothing much will change.Remember it was congressional republicans who went to the white house and told Nixon to resign.
There is very little evidence of any cohesive strategy by congressional democrats.
