An Open Letter to God:
Dear Supreme Deity.

We poor humans down here are confused by a few things. Oh, I could ask you about the purpose of suffering and why you allow such evil things to be done in your name, but, well, I have a few theories about that I think will tide me over until I shuffle off this mortal coil and learn the answers for myself.

No, my question is about your most ardent followers. Are you planning on Rapturing them anytime soon? They're down here really messing up the place and, frankly, the rest of us are getting a little tired of cleaning up after them. They start wars, kill people, treat their women-folk like crap, and make all-around nuisances of themselves. The list of crimes gets longer and longer by the day--everything from usury to sexual predation of children.

So, in the interest of Peace on Earth and Goodwill toward Man, could you please get the old Rapture machine warmed up? Please? We realize that there will be a certain amount of chaos at first as the vehicles they're driving are suddenly deprived of their pilots, but it couldn't help but be helpful in the long run.

And while you're at it could you let Allah know that HIS most ardent followers are ready to leave as well. They keep blowing themselves and other people up in an attempt to reach paradise early and it HAS to be messing with the scheduled departures and arrivals in Paradise as well.

I know this is a large favor, but I'm not asking it for myself. I'm asking it for all the people who are being harmed by those who are so certain that it's right around the corner that they're becoming quite desperate, even going so far as to drag us all into untenable situations because they expect the Rapture to come along and bail them out.

If you could do this one favor for us, we'd greatly appreciate it. After all, the message said that the meek would inherit the Earth and we'd like to get it before your faithful completely screw it up forever.

Thank you,

A humble skeptic

1. You know something.
I really really like you.

Nice post.

Could you request a call-up of the ones who just profess to be Christian as well. That would probably take care of all planet earth's problems. Then we could get to the business of cleaning the place up.

3. Good stuff my friend
Really good Mythsaje. Honestly it made me recall this:

Dear God- XTC

Dear god,
Hope you got the letter,
And I pray you can make it better down here.
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer,
But all the people that you made in your image,
See them starving on their feet,
cause they don't get enough to eat

From god,
I cant believe in you.

Dear god,
Sorry to disturb you,
But I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears,
And all the people that you made in your image,
See them fighting in the street,
cause they cant make opinions meet,
About god,
I cant believe in you.

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too!

Dear god,
Don't know if you noticed,
But your name is on a lot of quotes in this book.
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look,
And all the people that you made in your image,
Still believing that junk is true.
Well I know it aint and so do you,
Dear god,
I cant believe in,
I don't believe in,

I wont believe in heaven and hell.
No saints, no sinners,
No devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
You're always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown.
Those lost at sea and never found,
And its the same the whole world round.
The hurt I see helps to compound,
That the father, son and holy ghost,
Is just somebodys unholy hoax,
And if youre up there you'll perceive,
That my hearts here upon my sleeve.
If theres one thing I don't believe in...

Its you,
Dear god.

5. God's a little busy right now....
he has to micromanage all of those football, baseball and basketball games, not to mention NASCAR. Don't forget little Suzie's plaintive entreaty for a puppy along with poor people praying for enough to eat. And sick people? There's SO many prayers by sick people, for sick people, and after those prayers don't seem to work, prayers that they'll go to heaven and live with him in the fluffy white clouds forever and ever.
Then there's his followers praying for him to smite this enemy or that enemy and the prayers to guide George Bush's actions (he's WAY backlogged on those). The soldiers fighting Bush's war are all praying they get out of Iraq with their lives. Heck, some of them would even sacrifice a limb or two for the chance to get out of that hell hole. There's almost 4,000 unanswered prayers there that god just didn't have the time to get to. But the wide receiver from Miami just caught a touchdown pass that he's SURE god's responsible for so I guess it all evens out. Oh, and don't forget the game shows. People are always praying for his guidance to win game shows.
These are just a small portion of the prayers god has to answer (or not) each and every minute of each and every day. God has a full plate and all of these prayers will or will not be answered in the order they were received. You may be put on hold but please be patient: your prayers are important to him and he'll answer them as soon as godly possible. Or not.
It's been my observation that a good prayer and 50 cents will get me a newspaper in the morning.
Pray away, if it makes you feel better. But don't expect a reply. There's a guy trying to sink a 3 pointer to win the big game right now and he needs god's help, pronto. Next!

7. Dear Supreme Deity
Hey,

Quick word. Why all the non-existence? Wouldn't it be easier just to exist and that way a huge bunch of closeminded asshats could actually do all the shitty things they do in your name for a reason? This non-existence thing is pretty pointless. If people are going to kill each other and wreck the planet for you, the least thing you could do is exist. Mouthbreather.

yrs

me

PS you know what would be really cool? if your followers actually started to read your "holy" texts. if, once you exist, you could send a lightning bolt after anyone who claimed to believe in you but who didn't really really really know your "holy" texts, it'd be doing me a huge favor.

8. Another song to consider
Armageddon Days Are Here (Again) Lyrics
Artist(Band):The The

They're 5 miles high as the crow flies
leavin' vapour trails against a blood red sky
Movin' in from the East toward the West
with Balaclava helmets over their heads, yes!

But if you think that Jesus Christ is coming
Honey you've got another thing coming
If he ever finds out who's hi-jacked his name
He'll cut out his heart and turn in his grave

Islam is rising
The Christians mobilising
The world is on its elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds

It's war, she cried, It's war, she cried, this is war
Drop your possessions, all you simple folk
You will fight them on the beaches in your underclothes
You will thank the good lord for raising the union jack
You'll watch the ships sail out of harbour
and the bodies come floating back

If the real Jesus Christ were to stand up today
He'd be gunned down cold by the C.I.A.
Oh, the lights that now burn brightest behind stained glass
Will cast the darkest shadows upon the human heart
But God didn't build himself that throne
God doesn't live in Israel or Rome
God doesn’t belong to the yankee dollar
God doesn't plant the bombs for Hezbollah
God doesn't even go to church
And God won't send us down to Allah to burn
No, God will remind us what we already know
That the human race is about to reap what it's sown

The world is on its elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds
Armageddon days are here again

9. Bravo! Reminds me of "Chatting with Jesus" (from 2004)
Edited on Thu Sep-13-07 07:34 AM by Mzztakable
Jesus, what do you think of the recent presidential election?

In the United States?

Yes.

I don't do politics.

But the President is a Christian. He has dedicated his life to serving you.

He has dedicated his life to serving himself. That is the opposite of what I teach.

But he's a Christian.

He is an Old Testament Christian. The ancient Hebrew scriptures say that God is an angry God, a vengeful God, a jealous God. But he is not. Nor is he petty, nor vindictive, nor narrow minded, nor self-righteous. God was not made in our image. He is not insecure or emotionally immature. God is not like us, but in our better moments we can be like him.
He wants his children to be full of love, not full of hate.
He wants his children to be compassionate, not vindictive.
He wants his children to be open-minded, not narrow-minded.
He wants his children to be accepting not intolerant.
He wants his children to be righteous, not self-righteous.
This is the message that god sent me to share with the world two thousand years ago. This is the message for which I was crucified. And just as those who put me to death then ignored god's message, so your president ignores god's message today.

But he believes in the Ten Commandments.

If he does, then why does he ignore them? One says that "Thou shalt not kill." Yet he sends an army to invade a foreign land and kill tens of thousands of men, women, and children. Another commandment says “Thou shalt not bear false witness.” In modern language, this means that you shouldn't tell a lie. Is there anything your president has said that isn’t a lie?
Think of the Ten Commandments as one, single commandment that encompasses all the others: Love your fellow human beings as you love yourself. If you obey this one commandment then all the other commandments will take care of themselves.
This single commandment is the foundation of god's laws, the one on which all of the others are based. If you treat this as the foundation of your laws, and of your life, then you will be doing god’s work. If you honor this single commandment with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, then you honor god. There is no greater form of worship. There is no other form of worship that even matters. A thousand years in church are not worth a single act of compassion toward another human being, or to any of god's creatures.

But Bush has been born again. He accepts you as his Lord and Savior.

I was sent to teach people to turn the other cheek. He starts a war in the Middle East.
I was sent to teach people to feed the poor. He steals from the poor and gives to the rich.
I was sent to teach people to heal the sick. He ignores the tens of millions people in his own country who have no way to pay for health care. And he cares even less about those outside his country who need help.
I was sent to teach people to love all their fellow human beings as they love themselves. He orders American soldiers to slaughter the citizens of a foreign land. He brags about the death penalty. He ignores the millions of starving and sick human beings around the world who will die without food and medical supplies, things that his rich nation could provide for half the cost of his war in the Middle East.
It doesn't matter who you claim as your Lord and Savior when your hands are drenched in blood.

Are you saying that President Bush will go to Hell?

I'm saying that he has brought hell to us.

But he says he is a Christian. People believe him. I believe him.

Then watch what he does instead of what he says. He is a man full of hate, and anger, and violence. He is an anti-Christian. Verily, I say unto you that if he had he been alive two thousand years ago, his voice would have been the loudest among those who clamored to have me crucified. To him I would have been a terrorist.
The Bible speaks of the Antichrist. But there isn't just one, there are many. Everyone who washes his hands in blood and then claims to do so in my name is an Antichrist. These hypocrites say one thing and then do the opposite. They say they love god but then they brutalize god’s children. They say they are compassionate, but instead of comforting those in need they increase the suffering of their fellow human beings. The Antichristians are those who spew hatred, intolerance, and violence in the name of Jesus Christ. For now, for this generation, your president is their leader.

Then you don't agree with his policies?

I don't agree with his morals. He talks about moral values but his actions are immoral. In a world full of poverty and want, his life's work is to make the rich still richer. In a world from which god’s creatures are disappearing in huge numbers, where the air in many places is unfit to breathe and the water unfit to drink, where the future of life on the planet is in jeopardy, the crowning glory of his presidency is to make matters worse. He is a liar and a hypocrite. Worst of all, he is a mass murderer. These are the things I condemn.

Do you condemn him for using politics to pursue his religious agenda?

I condemn him for using religion to pursue his political agenda. He uses religion to manipulate people. He uses religion to spread intolerance and commit violence. And he does it all in my name.
He claims to follow my teachings, but I teach love, not hate.
I teach compassion, not “compassionate conservatism.”
I teach acceptance, not intolerance.
I teach forgiveness, not revenge.
I teach that “Thou shalt not kill” means just what it says. There is no exception for capital punishment. There is no exception for war.
Your president lives a life that violates everything that god asks of us.

But he’s such a devout man.

If you believe that a liar, and a hypocrite, and a mass murderer can be devout, then you do not know the meaning of the word. Reading the Bible doesn't make the world a better place. Going to church doesn't save lives or feed the hungry. God doesn't care about our devotion to scripture, he cares about our devotion to each other. That's why he sent me here. Not to save man from sin, but to save man from himself. That is the meaning of salvation.

Suffering is something we don't understand. But that hasn't shaken the faith of millions. I direct you to one, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who died in 1945, as an example. Martin Luther King as another.

I am a socialist of the Christian left and believe in the God/Creator of which you speak with such anger. Why bother writing to someone that you feel doesn't exist? I see, so often, angst reflected by lashing out at God. Looking at your web page, I see a lot of darkness and your post is full of anger and hatred at - not God (you don't believe) - but at people of faith. We are not all like Pat Robertson, et al. Humanity cannot survive fundamentalist religion of the right from Christianity or Islam. It also cannot survive the empty and angst-ridden humanism and fantasy (after looking at your web page) that seeks to replace whatever was lost, to cause the deplenished spirit of angry atheism and fundamentalist secularism.

I understand your anger and questions. Just remember that some of us believe in a very different interpretation of the Bible than those who reach positions we don't understand. Just as there are Muslims who interpret their ages-old books with something very different than the Taliban.

The life of Bonhoeffer - and his story - is one of faith while suffering for His sake. He is a part of the foundation of teaching liberal Christianity. I would encourage you to become acquainted with his story. Today, there are people like Jim Wallis and Ron Sider. We're not all bad. I promise. You'll find a lot of us at places like www.sojo.net .

Edited on Thu Sep-13-07 03:04 PM by Mythsaje
who think that we don't have to actually do anything to FIX what's wrong down here because they're expecting to be raptured any day now. They're causing unimaginable harm.

As for me being a skeptic...I'm only skeptical when it comes to the notion of a anthropomorphic deity who's paying attention to the tiny little sentient lifeforms scurrying around on this planet and directing their actions. THAT I don't buy.

On edit: There are millions of people with faith on this planet (setting aside the ones of faith who don't believe in a Supreme Being) who are NOT like the maniacs of the major religions. But they are more or less abandoning their responsibility to ride herd on their fanatical brethren, leaving it to the REST of us to try to salvage something out of the subsequent mess.

I'm interested that you got that from my website, actually. Now, my novels--yeah. I have a deep, abiding suspicions of revealed religion and recent events have done little to assuage it.
