John Kerry: Boehner's "Small Price"
Edited on Thu Sep-13-07 10:59 AM by fedupinBushcountry
Boehner's "Small Price"

Just yesterday on CNN, Wolf Blitzer asked John Boehner, the leader of the GOP in the House, this question (http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/horsesmouth/2007/09/gop_leader_boeh.php">video on Horse's Mouth):

"The loss in blood, the Americans who are killed every month, how much longer do you think this commitment, this military commitment is going to require?"

And Mr. Boehner responded:

"The investment that we're making today will be a small price if we're able to stop al Qaeda here, if we're able to stabilize the Middle East, it's not only going to be a small price for the near future, but think about the future for our kids and their kids.

snip>

Where is Representative Boehner's apology? And where is an Iraq policy equal to our soldiers' tremedous sacrifice?

3. He should apologize. There are many thousands who have sacrificed
so much, not just troops but their families too, and to call this sacrifice a "small price" to pay is to dishonor it.

5. The people who are really paying for this mess are the Iraqis.
They are paying a very heavy heavy price. And they didn't have one damn thing to do with al Quaeda until we started murdering them.

7. Yes, true--didn't mean to leave them out of the equation. Of course
the GOPers don't factor them in at all (except to threaten us with the guilt of their slaughter if we pull out--they're pawns, just like our soldiers).

10. Kos points out that there have been only three media hits of Boehner's ridiculous statement
So there have been exactly three media hits of the ridiculous statement -- one from the Think Progress link I used above, one a John Kerry post on HuffPost demanding an apology, the last a blog post from a TV station in North Dakota.

Well-deserved kudos for Sen. Kerry

The silence over "Small price"
by kos

Thu Sep 13, 2007 at 12:01:01 PM PDT

Where are the Democrats on Boehner's callous remarks about 4,000 dead being a "small price" to pay for this war?

As Kos notes today, not a single big news org (aside from CNN, which initially reported the remark) or pundit has murmured a word about it.

The reason for this disparity, however, doesn't reside just within the media. Recall what happened last fall with Kerry's botched troop joke. In less than a day, virtually every Republican in public life was condemning the remark in every conceivable forum. And Kerry's gaffe was obviously a screwed up gag, whereas there's very good reason to believe that Boehner meant his remark in exactly the way it came across. A very similar Republican message eruption happened with the MoveOn ad blasting General Petraeus the other day. In both cases, the media responded in kind.

By contrast, only a single Dem -- John Kerry -- has stepped forward to condemn Boehner. We hear various Democrats are weighing right now whether to try to make an issue of his comment. But thus far, there's virtual silence. This is astonishing -- particularly because Boehner's remark captures rather nicely what's going on with the war debate. Boehner, like the White House and most Republicans, is willing to sink an untold number of American lives into the pursuit of the fantasy of a stable Middle East and into the illusion that civilization as we know it will come to an end if we don't defeat the ever omnipotent Al Qaeda.

15. A true small price for Boehner
A true small price would be the arrest, trial, and imprisonment for treason of everyone in the Bush Administration who lied us into this war.

A true small price would be the forced resignation of every Republican in Congress for their continued support of these treasonous activities by the Bush Administration.

A true small price would be the corporate destruction of Fox News for their part in knowingly lying to the American people about Iraq and 9/11.

The death and maiming of our soldiers in a pointless war is not a small price, Boehner!

19. Dean just came out with a response
“House Republican Leader John Boehner’s comments yesterday are deplorable and he should apologize immediately. Our brave men and women who have given their lives in service to our country and their families have made the ultimate sacrafice, and to say anything less is insulting to their memories and service. Republicans stubbornly refuse to acknowledge that their Iraq policy is a failure, our troops are mired in a civil war and we’re not making the necessary political progress on the ground. Bohener’s comments show how truly out of touch the Republicans are. The loss of a son or daughter is never a small price to pay, especially for a policy which was initiated by Republicans who misled the nation about why we are there. The war in Iraq must end. We need to bring our troops home.”

20. THANKYOU, Chairman Dean.
I always appreciate how Dean and Kerry really stay on the same page for the most part. They both know the machine very well by now and still stand up to it without concern for the inevitable backlash. They do right - even knowing it can be lonely position.

of both the Republican AND Democratic establishment.
