Senate blocks bill on Iraq combat tours

By ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press Writer 1 minute ago

Democrats' efforts to challenge President Bush's Iraq policies were dealt a demoralizing blow Wednesday in the Senate after they failed to scrape together enough support to guarantee troops more time at home.

The 56-44 vote — four short of reaching the 60 needed to advance — all but assured that Democrats would be unable to muster the support needed to pass tough anti-war legislation by year's end. The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., was seen as the Democrats' best shot because of its pro-military premise.

(snip)

Of the 56 senators voting to advance the measure were 49 Democrats, six Republicans and Vermont Independent Bernard Sanders. Voting against it were 43 Republicans and Connecticut Independent Joseph Lieberman.

3. Doesnt he still caucus with the dems?
There must be some inside politics shit going on here because the Dems wont even criticize him for anything.

What exactly do they need him for?

17. What is that supposed to mean? Gung-ho Joe is bound and determined
to vote for this war, and a war with Iran, and a war with anyone in the area who's not into protecting his 'interests'.

2. The son of a...
He has even now exceeded my own very low opinion of him. I cannot believe that even Liberman would vote to aid in a fillibuster this way. I would like to rub this in the face of every jerk that supported Liberman on this website. IF any of them still remain here.

Just say something to the effect of " Joe is more devoted to the well being of (country that starts with I)

than he is to the well being of the citizens of the USA

They'll come crawling out of the woodwork all over your ass

26. Well
I would say he has a typically stupid way of showing his loyalty to said "I" Country. Ultimately destabalizing the region is only going to make things harder on Israel. So whether Holy-Joe is acting in that nations interest ultimately is questionable. Perhaps in the Likud's interest or the conservative pro war element there.

It is like allowing a Republican to sit in on our caucus meetings.

19. You do know that Hagel votes with Bush on like 99% of issues.
Same with the Murtha love...

I believe Hagel is a Repug in every other way except the war. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Anti-everything, Taxes, Gays, Choice.

Remember when everybody wanted Murtha to run for Prez cause he spoke out on the war?

He is a corrupt, pro-life Dem.

The guy wants to abolish every department in the gov't.

But he is against the war. Welcome to reality Ron.

At least he's somewhat honest telling us he wants to abolish everything.

Weed would be legal though! Yahooooooo!

18. Not Really
Once he's got the guarantee that he won't be the deciding vote on any progressive legislation, he will be free to side with the Dems and bolster his "independent" bona-fides with the voters in Minnesota for next year.

28. Coleman had permission to pretend that he's independent...
because the GOP Fascists knew they had enough votes without him. Now he has something he can point to while campaigning.

But on the Habeas Corpus vote, they didn't have enough of a margin, so "Norm" had to vote with the rest of the Repukes.

31. Repubs voting with the Dems were...
Coleman (R-MN) - Bush toady up for election in 2008, voting so he can pretend to be a moderate.
Collins (R-ME) - Lieberman pal up for election in 2008, probably voting for same reason as Coleman.
Hagel (R-NE) - Continuing to show some guts opposing Bush. Unfortunately retiring in 2008.
Smith (R-OR) - Identified as one of top 6 most vulnerable Repubs up for election in 2008.
Snowe (R-ME) - Not up for election until 2012, so this was actually a courageous vote!
Sununu (R-NH) - Up for election in 2008. Fairly strong Bush toady but did call for Gonzo resignation.
