The Ivy League school's endowment, run by David Swensen, swelled to $22.5 billion, in the fiscal year that ended on June 30, Yale said.
That makes Yale's endowment the second largest in the country behind that of Harvard University, which said last month its endowment returned 23 percent and grew to $34.9 billion amid bets on real estate, emerging markets and private equity.
Both schools topped the Standard & Poor's 500 index, which returned roughly 18 percent during the fiscal 2006 year.
