Bush: 'This government does not torture'

President Bush on Friday defended his administration's methods of interrogating terrorism suspects, insisting, "This government does not torture people."

"When we find somebody who may have information regarding a potential attack on America, you bet we're going to detain them and you bet we're going to question them, because the American people expect us to find out information, actionable intelligence, so we can help them -- help protect them," Bush said.

Bush said his administration sticks to "U.S. law and our international obligations."

He said, "The techniques that we use have been fully disclosed to appropriate members of the United States Congress." ...

16. A few bad apples alright...
named George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Donald Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzales, etc.

Those are the bad apples that should be spending the rest of their lives wearing stripes and making license plates, to put it kindly.

29. Who the fuck even knows??? It's not as though our press corpse is asking
for any concrete definitions!

My husband and I had the same reaction last night while watching Olbermann report the story. "WHY aren't the White House press people raising their hands at these news conferences and attempting to determine:

"Just WHAT do you consider 'torture'?"
"How do you define 'torture'? How does the president define it?"
"What, to your knowledge, does the White House/State Department/Pentagon/CIA consider 'torture'?"
"What does a rogue outfit like Blackwater consider 'torture' to be?"

And for the fudged answer or non-answer or evasion comment, the obvious follow-up:

"Okay, well then, is waterboarding considered 'torture'?"
"Is 'simulated drowning' considered 'torture'?"
"Is sleep deprivation considered 'torture'?"
"Are hard strikes to the head considered 'torture'?"
"Is involuntary and extended nudity considered 'torture'?"
"Are freezing temperatures considered 'torture'?"
"Are threats from attack dogs considered 'torture'?"
"How about any of these in combination? Is THAT considered 'torture'?"

ANYBODY you've seen at some of these press conferences, or even panel discussions with journalists, EVER ask anything like this? And aren't these the same people who belabored the "depends on what the definition of 'is' is," around the clock, across the board, in every venue, to the point of utter nausea?

The reason these people can't be nailed down is because nobody is making any hard, definitive, and relentless effort to nail them down. Nobody's even bothering to try! Nobody ANYWHERE! Not in the Press Corpse, and certainly not in Congress, unfortunately.

12. Horrifying
You don't see these images in any public displays to speak of. These are the kinds of things that people need to see to jar them into considering the atrocities being done in our name.

We should all print these out and start placing them all around our towns.

13. WHEN WILL THE SMELL GET TO YOU - WAKE YOU UP?

http://www.authorsden.com/categories/story_top.asp?catid=58&id=12746

Life has been very hard for all of us, and every day, I see more and more bodies piling up, or smell the horrifying stench of burning flesh or hair or hear people crying or screaming or see people being beaten, and it is all very scary, especially to a little boy like myself. (I am only eight years old.) It is during these times where I wish I could see my mama or papa again, and I wish I were still at home in Warsaw! I wish I were still at home in my little bed or safe in mama's arms while she would sing to me; I still can remember her telling me that she loved me so much, and that I was her angel! I also remember papa's strong arms and his big, booming laugh; but then the War came, and it changed everything; and now I am here, and I don't know what I may have done to deserve being here at Oswiecim (Auschwitz, as it is known by today)! I am only a little boy who can't walk, and I didn't ask to be captured by the Germans or taken to this strange and awful place where death is so real and horrifying! I didn't ask to be born a Jew, and I certainly didn't ask to be born handicapped! Now it seems that is exactly why I am here, at Oswiecim, at this camp, and I am so scared!!

They took Carl von Ossietsky And broke his body - but not his mind

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tn0fdKsQWg

Prisoner 562

Half a thousand, half a hundred
Six times two, pick up your pen
Child, my child, count it up now
That's the number that I mean

It's a number, just a number
One of hundreds, a sign of shame
Each man's jacket had a number
Men had numbers, none had names

Hitler's system took their freedom
Took them prisoner, one by one
For the courage of their convictions
They were tortured, gassed and burned

They took communist, they took pacifist
They took social democrat
Jew and Christian all were prisoner
In the concentration camp

To the camp of Esterwegen
Listen child and understand
They took Carl von Ossietsky
And broke his body - but not his mind

In Berlin upon the 4th of May
19 hundred and 38
The Gestapo with its treatment
Signed his death certificate

Five-six-two his prison number
Listen, child, I beg you please
Keep in mind, always remember,
He got the Nobel Prize for Peace

In the struggle against injustice
He fought hard and he fought long
Child - remember Ossietsky
Peace won't come by words alone

Words and music: Oswald Andrae
Song Lyric as sung by Dick Gaughan

Song of Choice

Early every year the seeds are growing
Unseen, unheard they lie beneath the ground
Would you know before their leaves are showing
That with weeds all your garden will abound?

If you close your eyes, stop your ears
Shut your mouth then how can you know ?
For seeds you cannot hear may not be there
Seeds you cannot see may never grow

In January you've still got the choice
You can cut the weeds before they start to bud
If you leave them to grow high they'll silence your voice
And in December you may pay with your blood

So close your eyes, stop your ears,
Shut your mouth and take it slow
Let others take the lead and you bring up the rear
And later you can say you didn't know

Every day another vulture takes flight
There's another danger born every morning
In the darkness of your blindness the beast will learn to bite
How can you fight if you can't recognise a warning?

Today you may earn a living wage
Tomorrow you may be on the dole
Though there's millions going hungry you needn't disengage
For it's them, not you, that's fallen in the hole

It's alright for you if you run with the pack
It's alright if you agree with all they do

If fascism is slowly climbing back

It's not here yet so what's it got to do with you?

The weeds are all around us and they're growing
It'll soon be too late for the knife
If you leave them on the wind that around the world is blowing
You may pay for your silence with your life

So close your eyes, stop your ears,
Shut your mouth and never dare
And if it happens here they'll never come for you
Because they'll know you really didn't care

Peggy Seeger

23. The photos that the American public were allowed to see
were the less horrifying ones. The Repugs & Dems in Congress viewed the ones that we will never
see. They did nothing about the situation except mouth a few words of indignation. If there was any real Justice in Amerika, Busholini & his Cabal of RW Fascists would be in Prison by now.

viewing those photos, videos, etc.

The photos were ordered released last year, iirc. Still waiting...

There is little, if any, justice left in the US. :(

27. Some of those folks will loose their lunch
with these very tame ones, after all... they are from middle america and none of this enters their imagination

I bet combat vets were disturbed... but had a lesser chance of loosing their cookies... mostly the horror of war makes it "easier" not to loose your lunch

25. Just the tip of a very large iceberg unfortunatley
U.S.: Abu Ghraib Only the “Tip of the Iceberg”

Human Rights Watch released a summary (below) of evidence of U.S. abuse of detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as well as of the programs of secret CIA detention, “extraordinary renditions,” and “reverse renditions.”

“Abu Ghraib was only the tip of the iceberg,” said Reed Brody, special counsel for Human Rights Watch. “It’s now clear that abuse of detainees has happened all over—from Afghanistan to Guantánamo Bay to a lot of third-country dungeons where the United States has sent prisoners. And probably quite a few other places we don’t even know about.”

26. Oh com'on that IS NOT torture
just little frat games

:sarcasm:

Ask Rush, he'll set you straight

For the record, I wonder if Rush will volunteer for the least objectionable of the things done at Abu Ghraib, I mean it is not torure, doncha know?

:sarcasm:

(Yes those sarcasms are needed)

For the record though... I am possitive these were the least objectionable of the photos... having seen victims of torture in the flesh, the photos are also missing certain smells that go with it

Don't ask, some of the lovely things one gets to do as a medic...

What the hell, interviewing victims can at times be as graphic

Why things like this literally mean I will not sleep well tonight

But I don't mind Seems, this has to be seen by any and all Americans that claim we don't torture
