31. Horses?
Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 06:29 PM by Mike03
Some organization/site is allowing people in burn areas to bring in their horses and "large animals", but I didn't catch the name of the location. I think it may be in Riverside. They have 140 so far, but they did not say there is any limit on how many they can keep. Also, owners are permitted to stay and comfort their animals.

ON EDIT:

Heard on KFWB News Radio 980 AM--great coverage, and online streaming, BTW

112. They've updated that list...
...with quite a few more homes.

A few were on or near Highland Valley Road where it hooks up with I-15 at the very tip of land south of Lake Hodges. The majority of houses lost seem to have been on the west side of I-15, where it moved south into residential areas after jumping the freeway.

So far, no mention of my mom's home. But a couple of her good friends lived on Aguamiel, and aerial footage suggests their house is gone. :-(

29. Have you cleared all the brush around your home?
Also, I'd suggest storing extra water in large containers, in case you lose water pressure.

I don't know if it's possible (or a good idea) to cover your roof with a layer of soil or dirt or sand, but please keep every possibility in mind if things get desperate.

40. Did you know that "Romney" in Tibetan means, "Dump Brush Here"?
So, if you see a sign that says, "Romney '08," that might be a good spot to dump all your cleared brush.

I'm kidding.

But seriously...

"Huckabee" is Japanese for "Disconnect our water."

She lives at the back of a large apartment complex, far from the street, and has no land line. Will she be awoken if there's an evacuation order?

I'm going to keep watch on the reports while she sleeps tonight, but without a functioning cell phone network, I won't be able to wake her either.

I live on the canyon overlooking Qualcomm at the 8 and the 805 intersection... heading home soon. Just to note anyone in the stadium would be safe either way there is no way the fire could get to it... its surrounded by huge concrete parking lots

73. It's got to get past Miramar MCAB and then go 2 miles through the city to get to
Qualcomm stadium- it's very unlikely that it will get down into Mission Valley to affect Qualcomm, even if if flanks around from the east through Mission Gorge. Also, it's not so dry in the city and valley area; not as much fuel to burn.
What I would be worried about would be the air quality issue. It's bad enough now - a couple days of thick, ashey clouds would be hazardous to health.

77. Flying over a raging fire is a serious deal with updrafts and in the Santa Anna Winds
Incident

Tanker 910 experienced its first serious incident on June 25, 2007. While on its third run over the White Fire in the Kern County mountains near Tehachapi, California, the aircraft was in a left bank while turning from base to final approach, when it encountered severe turbulence, the left wing dropped, and the aircraft descended 100 to 200 feet lower than expected.<6><10> The left wing struck several trees before pilots were able to power out of the descent. The aircraft climbed to altitude for a controllability check and to dump its load of retardant, then returned to its base in Victorville, where it made an emergency landing and was grounded pending an investigation, inspection, and repairs.<6><7><10>

A post-incident investigation showed that the aircraft suffered damage to the left wing's leading edge, slats, ailerons and flaps.<11>

Despite the accident, the CAL FIRE has stated that they are happy with the aircraft.<12> The aircraft returned to the sky for a test flight after repairs on July 30.<11><12>

It is seriously dangerous!
Tanker 130 down !!!

WALKER, Calif. (AP) - An air tanker fighting a blaze near Yosemite National Park caught fire Monday and crashed in this Northern California resort town, killing all three crew members and just missing a mechanic's shop, authorities and witnesses said (17Jun2002).

Air tanker 130 (N130HP) plunges to the ground after breaking up in the air, its wings folding up and falling off in a ball of flame, while fighting a fire near Walker, California, June 17, 2002. From Wikipedia, file photo
Tanker 910 is the call-sign of the only wide-body jet air tanker currently in fire service. The aircraft, operated by 10 Tanker Air Carrier, is a converted McDonnell Douglas DC-10 aircraft used for fighting wildfires, typically in rural areas. The turbofan-powered craft carries up to 12,000 gallons (45,600 liters) of water or fire retardant in an exterior belly-mounted tank, which can be released in eight seconds.

67. San Diego zoo situation as of 3:45 pm PST 10-22-07
Evacuations and fire preparations are underway at the Wild Animal Park due to the threat of nearby wild fires.

As of 5 a.m., all employees and personnel were evacuated from the Wild Animal Park.
As of 3:45 p.m., As fire conditions permit, limited personnel continue to monitor the facility, tend to spot fires, and ensure animal safety.
Evacuations:
Certain critically endangered animals, such as the California condors, were evacuated to a safe zone in the middle of the night. Several of the Park’s other animals housed in threatened areas have also been evacuated, including education ambassador animals.

The Paul Harter Veterinary Medical Center has been chosen as the safe zone for the condors and animals not located in field enclosures. The area is free of brush and other fuels, is located near the highway, and is a state-of-the-art facility equipped with sprinkler systems and medical equipment.

A majority of the Wild Animal Park animal collection is housed in open, expansive 80 plus-acre field enclosures. These enclosures contain no dry brush or coastal sage. The grass growing in these areas is heavily irrigated. Chance of fire spreading into these habitats is highly unlikely; therefore, the hundreds of animals who live in these areas will be safest to remain in the enclosures during a fire.

Historically, the Wild Animal Park experienced a fire in October 1993. Several hundred acres of habitat surrounding the Wild Animal Park were destroyed, but the fire did not spread to the field enclosures and no animals were harmed. During the 1993 fire, none of the Park’s structures were impacted with the exception of the Wgasa Bush Line Railway track, which served as a firebreak. The parking lot was used as a staging area for fire fighting units and a command center was operated from the keeper training trailer.

Heavy smoke has reached the Wild Animal Park. However, according to animal care staff, the animals are alert but are not showing behaviors of concern. The animals seem to know when they are in immediate danger and when they are not. Brush has been cleared from around the Park. Fire hoses are laid out and ready for use if needed.

The Zoo is close to downtown in the Hillcrest area. Unless the fires go down the 163 there is almost Zero chance the Zoo will have a problem. (The Zoo does run the Wild Animal Park though)

114. Harris Fire Update - 2:25am
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 04:32 AM by haele
We can see flames on Mt. Miguel in the distance across about three/four mesas from just east of Balboa Park. Since we're off a canyon, we're making our plans to get out of our cul-de-sac - it may be ocean facing, but it does have a feeder finger from the 94 and 15/805, so if the fire rushes up the 94 to downtown, we'll be able to head north to Qualcomm on surface streets. I don't think that will happen, but it never hurts to be prepared...

I'd hate to live in El Cajon, they're almost in a pincher should the Witch Fire continue south and the Harris Fire move north.

Wild Cat Canyon & Spring Valley have mandatory evacuations. Yesterday they were saying some areas may burn to the ocean, I didn't believe it - Tonight I'm thinking it might be true. It is quite frightening. Many evacuees. I'm near the coast, & will be going out tomorrow to try to help in some way, some centers are calling for volunteers. They are also calling on keeping the roads clear, so I'll be careful to be a help & not a hindrance.

Take care.

That's why robert's info is so important.

DHS is FEMA's parent agency. I don't trust either of them for a real emergency. Seems DHS knows if you pay off your credit card, but they are NOT a first responder any more, and they don't care to get involved.

139. Map of main fire areas, also Blackwater site
Here is a satellite photo of San Diego County, and the areas overlaid in red are the approximate perimeters of the two largest fires currently burning (Witch Creek and Harris fires). These perimeters are approximate, and are still changing at this hour. In fact, as I am typing this they are saying on the TV that 25 homes in Rancho Santa Fe have burned. The reddened areas are just approximations of the areas which have burned already. These 2 fires are still burning and both are reported to be moving towards the west.

Also indicated is the area burned in the Cedar Fire of October 2003, and the location of Blackwater's proposed new "Blackwater West" site (bottom right of image).

148. 1,000 Structures Burned By Wildfires
Officials Fear Erratic Winds; More Than 346,000 Homes Evacuated
1 Fatality, 1,000 Structures Burned By Wildfires

POSTED: 12:28 pm PDT October 21, 2007
UPDATED: 11:19 am PDT October 23, 2007

POTRERO, Calif. -- Fearing erratic winds, San Diego officials intend to be very cautious in allowing evacuated residents to return to their homes for fear of putting them back in the path of wildfires that are shifting direction throughout Southern California.

In all, more than 346,000 homes have been ordered evacuated in San Diego County.

Wildfires across Southern California have destroyed more than 1,300 homes and show no signs of slowing.

Authorities are placing reverse 911 calls to the San Diego County homes because of wildfire danger.

With the number of homes ordered evacuated, more than 750,000 people could easily have fled since the wildfires began over the weekend in San Diego County. The number of people joining the mandatory exodus is expected to grow throughout the day as more communities are put on standby to leave as several fires burned a path toward the sea -- through populated communities.

Says a spokesman for the county's emergency effort, "It's basically a mass migration here in San Diego County. The numbers we're seeing are staggering."

The county has lost at least 1,000 structures to the fires.

State officials warned that the total estimate of evacuees in the region could rise, because officials were still working to determine how many people had fled. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said that 274,000 homes and at least 300,000 residents were asked to clear out in San Diego county alone.

Officials said there are 23 active shelters, five of them full.

"We are in for another very dangerous day today,” said Ron Lane, San Diego County’s emergency services director. “The winds and the fire itself are behaving very erratically. Just because you’re safe right now and it looks like the fire is going away from you, that could shift.”

Officials want to avoid giving a green light for residents to return only to have to order them out again, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said.

“We have to make absolutely sure they’ll be safe there so we don’t have to move people again once they return,” Sanders said.

Officials also told residents who are not under mandatory evacuation orders to stay home from work and avoid unnecessary travel.

The fires have created a huge strain on the power grid. Authorities have shut down a host of high-voltage lines serving San Diego, prompting officials to urge residents to conserve power.

Evacuations were under way in eastern Chula Vista Tuesday, prompted by a wind-driven, 22,000-acre wildfire that killed a Tecate man and injured 21 others since it began in rural southeastern San Diego County on Sunday.

The so-called Harris Fire, the only deadly fire among about 10 raging across Southern California, began about 9:30 a.m. Sunday near Harris Ranch and Potrero Valley roads. It was about 5 percent contained, or surrounded, after burning about 22,000 acres, according to the California Department of Forestry, also known as Cal Fire.

Early Tuesday, firefighters were trying to stop the advance of flames up San Miguel Mountain and were worried the blaze could move into Lakeside, said Cal Fire Capt. Don Camp.

"The fire is very active off Proctor Valley Road," he said.

Thomas James Varshock, 52, died in the fire on Sunday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Structures have been damaged or destroyed in Tecate, Dulzura and Barrett Junction, according to fire officials, though no details about the kinds of properties or losses were available.

Unrelenting high winds -- in some spots, mountaintop gusts hit 100 mph -- periodically grounded firefighting aircraft Monday morning, adding to the difficulty of trying to make headway against the inferno.

Helicopters were able to begin aiding in the fire fight by midday Monday, but conditions remained too windy for fixed-wing aircraft.

"We've had a very limited assault from the air," Camp said, explaining that firefighters are approaching the blaze from its flanks.

"Essentially, we're chasing the fires," he said.

Residents along Mother Grundy Truck Trail and Deer Horn Valley were evacuated Monday to Steele Canyon High School, which was already filled with people evacuated Sunday. Overflow evacuees were sent to Santana High School in Santee.

Residents of Coyote Holler were evacuated east to Campo. Evacuation orders also were in place for areas north of Lake Wohlford, fire officials said.

Areas near Honey Springs and Lyons Valley roads, and all areas east toward Cleveland National Forest, were evacuated about 9:30 a.m. Monday.

In Potrero, sheriff's deputies ordered evacuations along Highway 94 for residents in Barrett Junction, Engineer Springs, Dulzura and all points between. Potrero, Tecate and parts of Deerhorn Valley were also evacuated.

Five firefighters and 16 civilians suffered burns and other injuries, officials said.

Authorities said the injured crew members got trapped in a "burn-over." They were overcome by towering flames that shot over their heads, apparently while defending a structure. A dispatcher said none of their injuries was believed to be life-threatening.

A Cal Fire investigative team arrived in San Diego Monday night and checked into a downtown hotel. The team will look at how the firefighters got caught in the burn-over, according to CDF firefighter Kathleen McGowan.

More than 300 firefighters were assigned to the blaze. The firefighting effort has cost about $1.3 million so far, according to Cal Fire.

Witch Creek Fire Continues To Burn

The Witch Creek Fire continued forging a path of destruction through San Diego County Tuesday, raging across 164,000 acres and destroying 600 homes and businesses as it advances uncontrolled east of Ramona and forces more people from their homes.

The blaze, which has been designated as the state's top firefighting priority in the midst of more than a dozen fires burning across Southern California, was just 1 percent contained. Some officials said the wind-whipped blaze could easily eclipse the level of destruction caused by the 2003 Cedar Fire that charred 280,278 acres and killed 15 people.

No one has died in the Witch Creek Fire, although seven firefighters and two civilians have been injured.

About 500 homes have been destroyed and 250 have been damaged. Also, 50 outbuildings have been destroyed and 50 more have been damaged, while 100 commercial buildings have been destroyed and 75 damaged, according to the California Department of Forestry, or Cal Fire.

The fire, which began Sunday, merged Tuesday with another blaze that started at about the same time in the San Pasqual Valley near Highway 78 and Bandy Canyon Road.

Mandatory evacuations were issued Monday for residents on several streets in Del Mar, while other residents were urged to prepare to evacuate. In Solana Beach, the city "strongly" encouraged residents to leave.

A flare-up on the Barona Ranch Indian Reservation led authorities to evacuate parts of Wildcat Canyon and Muth Valley just after 3 a.m. Officials said the fire had moved into Wildcat Canyon.

Among the hardest-hit areas is northern Rancho Bernardo, where as many as 300 homes went up in flames Monday, according to a group of firefighters taking a break at a strip mall on West Bernardo Drive last night.

The blaze also prompted the evacuation of Fallbrook and Pomerado hospitals, and most area schools were closed Monday and again Tuesday. About 34,000 San Diego Gas & Electric customers were without electricity Monday night.

There are 1,492 firefighters working the fire. About 1,200 National Guard troops began arriving in San Diego Tuesday and are expected to help with law enforcement, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said.

Shelters were set up at Qualcomm Stadium, Santana High School, Poway Community Park, Poway Girls & Boys Club, Campo Community Center, Mission Hills High School, Mira Mesa High School, Escondido High School, the Del Mar Fairgrounds, Steele Canyon High School and San Marcos High School. Several of the school shelters are full.

The Witch Creek Fire primarily has been fueled by thick, old brush just outside the burn area of the Cedar Fire, considered one of the worst wildfires in state history. That conflagration, which broke out the evening of Oct. 25, 2003, destroyed more than 2,200 homes and caused $1.06 billion in insured losses. A hunter, Sergio Martinez, of West Covina, admitted setting that blaze to signal for help after he became lost in the Kesslar Flats area. Martinez was sentenced to six months in community confinement. He was also ordered to perform 960 hours of community service and pay $150 a month to the U.S. Forest Service for five years, with the money to go toward training hunters.

Brush Fire Breaks Out In Wildcat Canyon
A fire broke out along Wildcat Canyon Road near the Barona Ranch Indian Reservation Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fire, reported along Wildcat Canyon Road at Mile Marker 3 at 1:14 a.m., was burning in a line about 300 yards wide along "the whole side of the mountain," according to a CHP dispatcher.

Dry, Gusty, Santa Ana winds will slowly end today as high pressure moves to the east. An on-shore flow will slowly return during the evening and early Wednesday morning which should help reduce the wildfire danger.

151. The Harris fire is coming from the south
This fire started in Potrero--a rural area, where oddly enough, Blackwater was going to set up shop. We have a DU video about the protests in Potrero in the video forum.

Anyway, this fire has been growing and moving northwest, from the US/Mexico border toward the city limits of San Diego proper. This is the fire I am watching carefully. If it moves too far north, we within the city limits will be evacuated.

The Harris fire hit San Miguel overnight and knocked out lots of communications signals including TV and radio. Two TV stations in SD are sharing a signal now because of burning towers.
