UNC and Duke Get Exemption To Use Sprinklers
In the middle of a major drought both UNC and Duke University were given business exemptions which allow them to use their sprinkler systems in order to water their Field Hockey field every day. The fields are made of astroturf.

2. Even more obscene are the pristine lawns of banks and corporate offices
I don't get as upset about the lawns at Universities and School - because at least they will actually be used by our kids. What I get upset about is all summer long I drive by many, many banks and even more corporate headquarters or offices that have their sprinklers running at 7:30AM and when I pass by them again at 5:30PM on the drive home. Who knows how many other times during the day they water. Their grass, which is never walked upon or used for anything other than looks, is lush and green - while the rest of the area is struggling under the most debilitating drought that we've experienced here in East Tennessee. Our whole area was withering and dieing, while they watered merrily with wanton disregard to the areas water needs. While the water departments sent out "CONSERVE!" and threatening letters like "if we see you watering your lawn, we'll fine you" to us peons, the fat cats got to keep watering their lawns.

3. My Chapel Hill banks have brown grass and shrubs.
I am sure there must be some watering somewhere, but not much around here during the last two months. Probably about half the shrubs at the BofA, RBC, and Wachovia cluster are brown and appear to be dead. We had been allowed sprinklers one night a week until last week, but most everyone just let it go 4-8 weeks ago -- maybe a little hand watering of a few special shrubs in the yard.

In this part of NC, the fines for illegal watering are large; repeat offenders have their water turned off.

5. Well, we all know the world stops for sports. This doesn't surprise me.
It makes me sick, but doesn't surprise me in the least.:grr:

People can die of thirst, but I'll be DAMNED if we'll lose out asroturf! SICKENING!!!!!!
