To the California DUers affected by the fires: We're here. Just like we were for

the Gulf Coast folks two years ago.

"Being here" may not amount to much in concrete terms, but I do hope it helps ease your pain even just a little bit to know that we are.

May you all be safe and may your houses survive.

On edit: Stone me, I just saw the threads where people were saying "Hey, it's just a bunch of rich Californians, so let their houses burn down." To anybody who has that opinion, please allow me to offer you a hearty, and heartfelt, "Fuck You."

If you can be that fucking cynical and that fucking callous, if you can be THAT unfeeling toward your fellow Americans (and human beings, people with families who are losing their homes for Christ's sake, people whose lives are in danger), the let me further state: I don't want to be associated with you anymore. Go join the Republican Party, where that kind of contemptible disregard for other people is the norm, even celebrated. The Republicans would LOVE to have you, because you're just like them.

There's a reason why Envy is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. It indicates a defective soul.

3. Native Californian here
Northern, not Southern (and I live in the Midwest now).

Anyone who insults my state is invited to challenge me to a duel.

affected as I live in Pasadena, but my heart goes out to all the people who live in the fire zones. It seems the most beautiful parts of So. Ca. are going up in flames and it's heartbreaking to watch. My heart also breaks for all of the wild animals, especially up in Lake Arrowhead - what a shame. I think they will discover that a lot of these fires were arson and that's what hurts the most.
on edit: I called my Marine nephew who lives around the Wild Animal Park and told him they were asking for volunteers to get the animals out. It's 8pm here and he said "I'm not going out there at night". ha He will see if they still need help in the morning - can't say I blame him for not wanting to go in the pitch of night.

5. Absolutely.
There may or may not be something I can do directly, but if nothing else, I have an ear for you if you need to talk.

6. Everything here is getting covered with ash. The winds are blowing from east to west bringing the
smoke and ash with it. I'm not near a fire but the smoke and ash are in everyones lungs in the Santa Barbara area. The sun looks orange and the air is dirty. Not a good thing.

10. Oh, thank you too much. Someone dear to me lives in Moorpark. And no, you
envious fucks, she's NOT rich. And she has a husband and two kids. And a house that she and her husband worked and sweated on for almost the last twenty years.

You think it's OK for her and her family to lose that?

11. Thanks.
The evacuations are listed in a confusing way, and I don't know how quickly they update. I didn't see Rancho Penasquitos and I know they got the order to leave.

9. Thanks Red.
I have a house full of evacuees right now, and more on the way.

They also just evacuated all of the aircraft out of Miramar which is just on the other side of the mountain out my back window.

Gonna be a long night here.

16. Three years ago during the cedar fire, someone was nice enough to take us in...
...after we got evacuated. I swore if anything ever happened again like that, and I was ever in a position to help, i would do whatever it took to help.

It's my turn to help out someone else this time.

17. Yes. Kinda like those sappy insurance-company commercials they've been showing
during the baseball games, but the underlying concept is valid...indeed necessary if we are to survive as a society.

And hey, I'll bet you're not even checking their voter-registration cards before deciding whether to let them in or not!

14. I'm in Connecticut. If they can scrounge the airfare, they can stay here.
We have lots of room, and enjoy having company.
