My son is a fighting fires in So. Cal.
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 06:47 PM by ClayZ
He flew to San Diego this morning, from Washington State. He is with a crew of 6 from his fire dept.

I shouldn't have looked at the pictures.

They are calling it the Witch Fire. It looks like HELL!

God Bless those poor people and may all the angels watch over the firefighters!

This is what he has trained for since he was 18. He is now 33, but he has seen nothing like that!

They were good to go this morning when I talked to him. He text messaged me at 1:00 that he was in North Island -San Diego.

I think I will have to take drugs for a while!

I'm in Riverside County, just north of San Diego County.

And, guess what? There are two burning right around me (I'm safe - I have a big home, on a small lot, surrounded by fire-retardant tiles and cement patios), but, my friends who live in De Luz and the wild country are going to be having a tough time.

He is in our family's prayers (or positve thoughts, if you prefer).

27. As I look to the south
about 10 miles away I can see a huge plume of smoke (it is holding the San Diego/Riverside County line in the Fallbrook/Rainbow area. We are waiting for sundown witht the hope that the typical afternoon wind dies down. The firefighters will be able to get a better grasp on that line. Fingers crossed.

DUer's that have been holding their breath and waitig and watching with those of us here in the fire zone really appreciate the moral support way more than you all know. :grouphug:

49. Yikes, thats terrible!
We have a little cabin in the woods near Leavenworth Wa. Several years ago there was a terrible forest fire, and that is just what happened. The fire jumped our cabin but burned the one two lots down and many others in the area.

It makes you feel awful and glad at the same time.

23. "The Firefighter’s Prayer"
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 07:36 PM by Breeze54
http://www.joellewallach.com/firefighter_solo.shtml">The Firefighter’s Prayer

When I am called to duty,
Whenever flames may rage,
Give me strength to save a life
Whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently
Put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling
To give the best in me
To guard my every neighbor,
protect his property.

And if according to Your will
I must answer death's last call
Bless with Your protecting hand
My family one and all.

You must be very proud of your son.

Safe Home!

50. Thanks. We're okay in West L.A.
But the daylight is eerie. All sort of a dull yellowish. A very strange cast on everything all day, and tonight, the not-quite-full moon was the same dull yellow. I feel sorry for the asthma sufferers out there, too.
