Blue Mountain Greeting Cards: Boycott them!
Edited on Wed Feb-14-07 10:13 PM by SCRUBDASHRUB
http://www.rawstory.com//news/2007/National_greeting_card_company_associates_Love_0214.html

National greeting card company carrying 'Love Democratic style' card with Pelosi, others in bondage

<snip>

This Valentine's Day, one of the nation's largest greeting card companies is circulating a satirical online greeting card that depicts "Love Democratic Style" as "throw family values out the window" and depicts House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) dressed as a dominatrix and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) as a maid. RAW STORY could not locate a similar "Love Republican Style" card at the company's website.

Shots from Blue Mountain's greeting card are shown below. The short eCard from the company plays a jingle for about 30 seconds with a variety of colorful images of Democratic political leaders in compromising situations.

A photograph of Majority Leader Senator Harry Reid follows with his face beneath a high heel, and the declaration that family values have been thrown "out the window":

RAW STORY was awaiting comment from Democratic offices and American Greetings Interactive, the company that owns Blue Mountain, at press time. AGInteractive is owned by American Greetings, which says on its website that it is "one of the world's largest manufacturers of social expression products."

7. THE ARTICLE IS MISLEADING! It is a user-made card, NOT a Blue Mountain card.
It's a "user-made" card. That's sort of like the "Bush/Hitler" ads from MoveOn.Org's contest being touted by the GOP as an official ad.

10. I took another look at the site and it appears that
the card is a "member card" meaning that you have to be a dues paying member of the site in order to send it - as opposed to a free card which anybody can send - member or not.

When you go to their site, the card is there. It's outrageous and should be pulled.

First of all, this was a MEMBER-DESIGNED CARD
http://www1.bluemountain.com/category.pd?adisplay=1&path=35290

Raw Story basically had nothing else to report, so they decided to create a story.

Second of all, it needs to be pointed out that Blue Mountain was founded by two very liberal people, Susan Polis Schutz and her husband, Stephen. They don't run the company anymore, but knee-jerk denunctiations of Blue Mountain Cards will invariably tarnish the Schutz' sterling reputation.

It is misleading then, as one would automatically assume the card was created by Blue Mountain.

15. I think there is some confusion here as to what a "member"
card is. My understanding is that you have to be a dues paying member of the site in order to send a member card. I don't think it has anything to do with card design. If it does, I can't find any explanation of it on the "Help" part of the site. I clicked on the "Democratic" card and received a message that I had to be a member of the site in order to send it. Only a few "free" cards can be sent by anybody.

Blue Mountain creation - like all of their e-cards. Nowhere on their site does it say members can create and post whatever e-cards they like. Membership only entitles them to send cards listed in the "members only," as opposed to free, section.

If I'm mistaken, please point me toward the information on the Blue Mountain site that says members can freely create and post their own e-cards for other members to send.

18. How could a commercial enterprise be so
stupid as to not have the same type of cards displaying repugnants.... unbelieveably stupid.

They just cut their revenues and profits in half. Dumb f*cks. Take that to the bank.

20. I don't use them anyway
but if I did, I wouldn't stop over this. It's a user-made card. Don't like it? Make one of your own and put it up there!

This is why we can't have anything approaching rational political discussion in this country anymore. If one side is offended, it's out with the knives! And believe me, people go LOOKING for offense.

Let's have MORE political discussion, political humor, political debate, not less.

Why would any company want to contribute to such discussion when people respond like this?

22. It's one of the drawbacks of being popular or powerful. Remember during the
Clinton/Gore administration? Remember those postcards with Clinton and Gore's heads photoshopped on the bodies of half-naked muscular guys in S&M getup embracing each other? I got those more than once from Democratic friends. And when we take over the White House in 2008, we'll see a lot more of that kind of thing again.

30. Am I the only one that LOVED Dominatrix Pelosi? That was TOO campy!!
I realize it was supposed to be insulting, but if you don't find it insulting, is it an insult? I want a life size cut out. Black vinyl knee-high stilleto boots totally rock. She is from San Francisco after all - home of Folsom Street Fair and Exotic Erotic Ball. She's taking charge around here and she's my representative. :)

31. Let's put it this way
Nancy Pelosi is second in line to the President of the United States... She is the first woman to become Speaker of the House... She has broken down the barriers that have been put up by men for centuries. I respect her and because I do, I think those images are totally offensive....

Edited on Thu Feb-15-07 02:02 PM by kdpeters
But point taken. I know some people find camp and drag offensive. Tell you the truth, there's a lot of stuff in those novelty stores on Castro Street that are quite tasteless. I'm just partial to the leather and latex styles. I've got a pair of vinyl pants myself. A lot of people find that offensive too. Even a lot of people in the gay community. I didn't find it offensive, but that's the kind of clothes I like to wear.

33. I've seen a lot of anti-shrub cards and never felt the need to complain
In fact, I like them. This is a user-made, member only card, on a 100% blue company's website. Would we feel the same way if it was anti-bush? I just think this is wrong - I don't like the card, wouldn't use the card, but it's someone's idiotic attempt at being funny, and in fact, is part of free speech.

Is free speech a one way street? I'd love to see a * administration card like this one, and sure wouldn't complain about it....
