Post your Peter Pan peanut butter expiration dates here!
You may have heard about the peanut butter recall, but if not here is a brief summation:

ConAgra recalls Peter Pan for possible salmonella

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has linked 288 cases of food-borne illness in 39 states to consumption of varying types of Peter Pan peanut butter, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Great Value manufactured at the same plant in Georgia, could carry a similar risk of contamination, the center said. Great Value peanut butter made by other manufacturers is not affected.

"Although none of our extensive product tests has indicated the presence of salmonella, we are taking this precautionary measure because consumer health and safety is our top priority," said Chris Kircher, a ConAgra spokesman.

Kircher said the company is still assessing the recall's financial impact.

The outbreak appears to be ongoing, and the first consumer may have become ill in August, according to the FDA. Symptoms associated with salmonella are fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. ConAgra, an Omaha, Neb.-based food company, said it is recalling peanut butter of both brands beginning with product code 2111 imprinted on their lids. <snip>

http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/conagra-recalls-peanut-butter-possible/story.aspx?guid=%7BE801CA67-18F8-47E3-B9A3-19DE7F4991A6%7D

I happened to have two jars in my pantry, both with the recalled code, and the expiration dates are a year apart: May 4, 2007 (purchased several months ago, perhaps up to a year) & June 14, 2008 (purchased within the last month). Could this recall actually encompass their entire production for the better part of a year? If you have a jar(s) from the infected batch, what part of the country are you in (we're in Ohio)? What are your expiration dates?

Another thing that's got me puzzled: According to the FDA, there have been 288 cases of salmonella poisoning since last August. I realize that during that time there were several e-coli breakouts from spinach and other fresh produce, but does anyone recall reading that there was a simultaneous investigation regarding salmonella?

1. Doesn't last long here
Peanut butter doesn't last that long around here. If I bought it a month ago it's already gone. This is a bit disturbing as my kids have had several bouts of what I thought was a stomach bug this past year. Oddly, the adults never caught the stomach bug.

3. Gah!! I have a Peter Pan jar with 2111 on the lid!
Should I take it out back and blow it up with plastic explosives? (Not that I'd know where to get any or anything!)

Seriously, my 3-year-old's been eating this. Not much--we just opened the jar--but still....He hasn't gotten sick or anything, though, thank goodness. Guess I'll pitch it and write it off as a lucky break.

21. Peter Pan USED to be my favorite pb
I liked the sweeter taste with all the added sugar. However my husband turned me on to Jif, at first it was different, and I preferred the other brand. As far as commercial pb goes, I LOVE Jif and don't mind paying the extra money for it. However, my absolute fave is the fresh ground pb that I buy at Henry's. Just peanuts, yum. But my kid and husband hate it, so I buy the two 40 ounce jars at Stater Bros. for $7.99.

But MorningGlow Jr. is in toddler all-sugar, all-the-time mode. So for now, alas, it's Peter Pan. But not this jar! Luckily he'd only had a bit of it.

Damn I just openned this today and had a couple PBJs. It's Peter Pan Whipped Whipped Creamy, with a number 21117012002015C. It's the first time I had it, pretty good actually, but now I have to return it.

4. Eh, I prefer "Smuckers Natural" peanut butter.
Just stir when you first open the jar and you're good to go. No sugars, no corn syrups, no hydrogenated fats - just peanuts and salt. Gotta love it!

The tops of my jars also say 2111, but we've gone through three 18 oz Smart Choice jars since Christmas without any problems. Expiration dates Feb 08 on the last two, mostly spent jars. The last jar expires Apr. 08 and is unopened.

18. 46 Jars of Peanut Butter!?
And I thought my family ate a lot...

I wish my kids would eat natural pbutter, but they only like creamy Jif.

There are some other great choices, too, like Almond Butter.

I also recently tried something great called Sun Butter, which is made with sunflower seeds. Yummy!

31. OK, here's my count from lunch time. I have 21 unopened jars of Smooth,
one half-eaten jar from which I just ate my lunch, and 2 empty jars sitting in my recycle bin that all have the dreaded '2111' in the product id.

Now folks, I emptied those 2 jars within the last 7 days and I've had no illness as a result.

32. Did you have any jars that *didn't* have the 2111 code?
So far it seems like every jar of Peter Pan has that same code.

Could this recall actually include *every* jar they've produced for the last year??

36. Yes, about 25 of them. The main story on CNN.com has been updated and I think it
now says the PP peanut butter is in 35 states (with the 2111 product number) and that the outbreak started in August. Well, I've gone through a whole lot of peanut butter since August!

(Chapel Hill-Carrboro, NC) and asked them to use their e-mail/phone notification system to get the word out to parents.

I spoke to the store manager where I shop. He had pulled his entire stock of Peter Pan peanut butter this a.m. after reading a small article in the local paper (Raleigh News & Observer). He had NOT been contacted by the district management of his store, and was not going to put up a sign unless they told him to.

Apparently, ConAgra has shut down the facility in Sylvester, GA where this peanut butter is made.

What burns me about this is that these cases have been popping up since August, and they're only now getting around to informing the public.

Fortunately, it doesn't appear that any of us are ill. We were still unaware and eating from the jar as late as last night. Yikes!

I checked my pantry, and my peanut butter stockpile (8 jars) is all Jiff except for this one jar of Peter Pan. We finished off at least one jar of Peter Pan in the last couple of weeks that probably came from the same batch as the half eaten jar, but I of course had already thrown the jars away.
