Reagan library can't fully account for 80,000 artifacts
A 'near universal' security breakdown left items open to theft by insiders, an audit says.
By Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar and Catherine Saillant, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
November 8, 2007

WASHINGTON -- The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library is unable to find or account for tens of thousands of valuable mementos of Reagan's White House years because a "near universal" security breakdown left the artifacts vulnerable to pilfering by insiders, an audit by the National Archives inspector general has concluded.

Inspector General Paul Brachfeld said that his office was investigating allegations that a former employee stole Reagan memorabilia but that the probe had been hampered by the facility's sloppy record-keeping.
"We have been told by sources that a person who had access capability removed holdings," Brachfeld said in an interview. "But we can't lock in as to what those may be."

The hilltop complex near Simi Valley that houses Reagan's papers -- as well as the Air Force One that served as the "Flying White House" for seven presidents -- is the most visited of the nation's 12 presidential libraries. Many of those facilities are understaffed. And many are struggling to keep track of hundreds of thousands of presidential gifts, including valuable objects bestowed by foreign leaders, American folk crafts, and T-shirts and political buttons.

2. Let them steal the Reagan crap, it only encourages free trade.
They should immediately privatize the Library and sell off everything to private corporations and the uber wealthy elite Reagan created. Then a private corporation could run the Library, with the money gained from the sell-off. There wouldn't be much left, but who cares. It would be privatized just like the rest of our government. It is what the Raygun would have wanted.

Raygun had no love for government because he thought it was inefficient unlike ENRON, Haliburton and Citibank. He became president and proved how inefficient government really was.

The audit found that the Reagan library was unable to properly account for more than 80,000 artifacts out of its collection of some 100,000 such items, and "may have experienced loss or pilferage the scope of which will likely never be known."

Seems bushes government ain't much better than Raygun's. They seem to have lost 80% of the Reagan crap. I say privatize it immediately. Don't worry about the stolen crap, that's what free trade is all about.

3. Have they looked in the RAYGUN house? Ron & Nancy were rapacious in

ripping off, scoring, and shaking down their benefactors, sponsors (General Electric), and political contributors. They lived by "keeping up with the JONESes," but in their case the JONESes were top-of-the-liners, A-listers, so the RAYGUNs had a lot of keeping up to do.

What about RAYGUN's supposed strength in national security---trust but verify, which made the Ruskies LAUGH in his face? Rethug GREED trumps all.

I luerve Kitty KELLEY's book. Recently one of the tabloids said Nancy called Ms KELLEY the person she hates more than any other---haha!1

5. I'll bet this is just cover for a program of record destruction.
They can't hide the records forever, and the truth must be hidden.
