Wet Ballots Don't Halt Exercise In Democracy

But Problems Delay Some Tallies On Optical Scan Voting Machines

By Amy Renczkowski , Published on 11/8/2007

Groton's Democratic registrar David Rose was told that using the new optical scanning machines might require a special tool — a hair dryer.

Damp ballots, if not dried off first, could jam the machines, registrars were told at a conference with the state registrar of voters.

“They said there's been some problems with wet ballots in the past,” Rose said. “But we didn't have any.”

Other towns did. Mary Clark-Wilson predicted the Election Day wet paper ballot mess long before the first scanner jammed.
