are some republican women secretly democrats?
i've heard this several times. today it was in a discussion about hillary. they said that republican women may vote for hillary, but will not tell their husbands.

a few years ago i heard that many women whose husband's think they're republicans secretly vote for democrats.

are republican women living like they're back in the 40s? are they acting like the perfect "little wife"?

1. I have not heard that.
The repub women I know are too outspoken to
be 'living like they're back in the 40s.'

2. I wouldn't be surprised if some Rep. women will vote for Hillary...
But not telling their husbands seems pretty old-fashioned ~ maybe some of the evangelicals, who value the right to choose.

4. There are probably also Republican men who are secretly Dems...

It might be going against the grain too much to admit it at the office, but their wives would leave them if they actually voted Republican.

5. In her most
recent election, Senator Clinton won by a huge margin in NYS. She won most of the upstate, rural, traditionally republican counties. That is something that RFK and Moynihan were not able to do. The numbers indicated she got far more than democratic and independent support. Exit polls showed that a large number of republican women voted for her.

6. Yes! My Mom may be one of them. I remember when I was a kid, she'd take me into the voting booth,
she'd vote for a female Democrat, and tell me "Don't tell Daddy I voted for her"!

I also think my boss is a closet Democrat who acts Republican because he's insecure about his masculinity.

I'd be willing to bet that 50% of Republican men actually favor the Democratic platform, but vote Republican due to their effective branding of the Democrats as effeminate, weak, sexually confused, etc.

17. Yes. Yes it is. If they didn't brand Dem men as "gay", and Dem women as "sluts" or "witches",
they'd probably only carry the 23% that John Dean talks about as having authoritarian personalities. Maybe 28%---the authoritarian 23% + the richest 5%.

21. LOL, when in reality, there is no shortage of gay Republican men and promiscuous R women.
The stereotypes seem to attract insecure people. As if being a Democrat would be bad for their image.

22. Instead of "how about those Raiders" , or other sports teams,
I would LOVE it if someone in a crowded elevator said aloud, to everyone in particular, "Oh, man! How about those gay Republicans! They're bangin' down the closet door! Who knew the Republicans were all gay!"

9. I wouldn't think so.
They probably wouldn't be Republican unless they meant it. I don't accidentally register for a political party. You have to deliberately check a box on the form. It doesn't just happen, and they shouldn't do something if they are lukewarm about it. If they are that scared of their husbands, it bespeaks a much worse problem--and one for which they only have themselves to blame. There's no reason they can't be something else if that's what they wanted more.

24. They don't have to be "scared of their husbands".
Maybe she just isn't honest with her husband about her true political opinions. The two of them may have once been on track, say, both voted for Bush in 2000. But over the past 7.5 miserable years, one of the spouses (in this case the wife) may have grown really dissatisfied with republicans, but she's quiet about it, because she doesn't want to start an argument.

10. Analogy for Women Voting Democratic
I never realized how much the macho mindset, often leads some one to vote Republican. I just saw an Iraq documentary called War Tapes, and one of the soldiers in it (who was reading the Nation Magazine) said that the majority of his comrades would be voting Bush. Moreover, he said the ones who weren't voting Bush, would be doing so secretly (and not admitting it to their friends). He chalked it up to the rhetoric of fighting it out with the terrorists being appealing to a lot of 'macho' soldiers.

If this is what soldiers are doing amongst their comrades, I can just imagine a lot of Republican wives voting Democrat.

11. probably, but...
... it would really suck being on the other side of that. People have GOT to be honest about this stuff.

I mean, imagine being with a guy who let you believe that he shared your values, and then finding out that he'd been voting for Bush, listening to Rush, posting on FR, supporting the war -- the whole nine yards...

Oh, man... I'd be fit to be tied. That's a pretty serious deception. He'd have an exciting life after that.

18. but you're forthright with each other...
That's different.

I can handle disagreement (up to a point).

I just can't deal with, "yes dear, I agree with you," if it really means ('no dear, I don't agree with you, and in fact I'm secretly working to destroy everything you care about').

we do have political arguments, but like i said "he's moderate". when it gets too heated, i just say "we can't talk about this -- it's better that we change the subject".

12. I think Laura Bush is at heart a Democrat
Edited on Thu Nov-08-07 06:09 PM by Tactical Progressive
Though I'm sure living in that environment she votes Republican.

And yes, I think probably a lot of women have done that, guys too, and especially now, after eight years of this, are no doubt going to vote Democratic in the privacy of the voting booth. Think of all the spouses who, when the guy is going off irrationally about whatever unsupportable, irrational right-wing bs that they go off about, say things like - 'It's just politics honey, forget about it.' Maybe with a little 'They're all crooks and liars.' chaser.

Hell, there's probably alot of women who'll do it JUST to get back at their husbands, even if they're not committed Democrats. Have you ever been around right-wing family? They are obnoxious.

15. Laura was a Lefty
In Kitty Kelley's book The Family she says that Laura Bush was a Gene McCarthy supporter in the sixties. She also says that the kids on campus, knew where to get weed, and it was Laura's dorm room.

14. Oh, I'm certain of it!
For example, couples who have poor communication. Or, male dominated communication, the type where he spoouts his opinions and she just politely listens and occasionally nods. There are a lot of marriages like that.

Some people don't want to leave a lousy marriage for whatever reaon.
I am close to someone whose marriage is a lot like what I described. Her husband is pretty R-wing, doesn't believe in global warming, and seems to be a Bush-supporter. She is quietly anti-Bush, anti-Iraq war, etc, and far to the left than her husband. They have the worst communication I've personally ever seen in a couple. Their pleasant conversations together must be boring as hell.
