28. It's on vacation with our run game.
I used to do a big jug of V-8 a day, but I've gotten away from it.

I need to get back to it.

I do get a couple glasses of blueberry juice a day though.

131. About once a week I have one of those $3 fruit drinks from the grocery store.
They have names like "Naked", etc, and they are designed with alot of fiber, minerals, vitamins, protein, and antioxidants. They are usually sweet, so you have to watch your carbs. They are made with berries, vegetables, juices, etc.

The $3 drink is two servings, BTW, and better than drinking V8 all the time.

159. Countdown's Veggie Salad
This salad has NO lettuce and is way cheap. If you have one for dinner, pair it with a baked potato.

The bed is either alfalfa or bean sprouts.
Broccoli, cauliflower, spinach leaves (fresh, not canned), plus whatever veggies you like.
Serve cold and crisp with ranch dressing. Heaven.
Sprinkle sunflower seeds on top.

A vegan introduced me to this. I may be a dedicated carnivore, but it pays to have diverse friends. (this goes great with steak and potatoes!)

12. i'd love to.
3-4 days a week i eat chinese food -- vegetables and rice -- so i'm doing it then. i don't really eat fruit. it seems to make me hungry.

i haven't had any veggies today, but for dinner i'll have grilled salmon and broccoli. now the amount of broccoli i will eat will equal about 3 servings.

66. Try Apples or pears for fruit
they're relatively high in fiber and slow the digestion process down so they fill you up quite quickly.

I live on a college campus and the food here isn't too bad so I can always manage to pull off something healthy. I'm not super picky or anything, I just aim for a balanced diet and know what to eat at what times at the day to maximize energy, and keep my metabolism high.

Raw vegetables are something good to snack on during the day that way you aren't confronted by a massive pile of steemed broccoli at the end of the day, that is of course if you feel obligated to eat your vegetables.

I try to eat an apple and bran muffin every day for breakfast... apple first, so I'm good and hungry for the Zen muffin;)

I have a great recipe for a salad with mandarin orange slices, dried cranberries, and pecans! The dressing is made from hazelnut oil.

I just made myself hungry! lol!

but i love carrots as long as there cooked in broth or stir fried. when i make soup and i put carrots in, i could easily eat a pound. but plain, no.

my husband has been eating stir-fry vegetables 2-3 times a week from the chinese restaurant. he always had trouble with his gums. even though he gets a deep scaling every 3 months, his gums bled. since he's eating the veggies, the bleeding has stopped.

18. It really depends where you shop
I am lucky I live in an urban area with hundreds of choices where to shop. The big chains, Safeway, etc. are the most expensive (except for Whole Foods) and their produce is terrible.

Farmers markets are usually good - but sometimes it is hard to get to one.

Fruit stands are the cheapest and usually are the best bet, but you have to wade through a lot of crap.

My personal favorite is Now if you don't live on the north side of Chicago you are out of luck. But they have great prices, great quality. It is primarily a mexican market but there are all kinds of food there. I could go on and on (and I am) but I feel lucky to have a place that is both good and cheap.

23. I get fruits and veggies at Aldi.
I don't buy much else there, since I bought a can of peaches marked "product of China". But they're one of the few places where I can find Illinois-produced apples (though most often they're Michigan apples, which are good, too). And cherry tomatoes from some greenhouse place in Chicago.

I try to buy as locally as possible, which is tricky after Farmers Market season. But Aldi is better than the other chains.

112. Frozen vegetables aren't expensive
Family packs of vegetables in the frozen food section are one of the cheapest ways you can eat. To me, frozen is as good, if not better, than the fresh in a grocery store. It depends on the vegetable, but what I buy typically costs about .25 per serving.

136. That's not entirely true
One serving (one cup) has has 10 calories, 7 mg of sodium, 2 g of carbohydrate, 1 g of dietary fiber, 1 g of sugar, 1 g of protein, 7% of the RDA of vitamin A, 3% of the REA of Vitamin C, 1% of the RDA of Calcium, and 2% of the RDA of iron.

http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-C00001-01c20dw.html

It is true that it Romaine is a better source for Vitamin A and C, but otherwise there is no (or insignificant) nutritional difference between Romaine and Iceberg lettuce (An equivalent amount of Romaine, for example, has 55% of the RDA of Vitamin A, 19% of the RDA of Vitamin C, 2% of the RDA of Calcium, and 3% of the RDA of iron - all other values are identical to iceberg).

http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-C00001-01c20dv.html

(Relative to the OP, I don't know how they designate serving size - what comes up at the link for iceberg is 1 cup, what comes up for romaine is 1 inner leaf. I adjusted them to be equal quantity for the above information.)

151. Yep.
If you go to the second link above, and switch the drop down menu to 1 cup shredded, rather than one leaf, you can see the numbers.

Viewed as a percentage of RDA, the numbers are slightly different (3% for iceberg v. 4% for Romaine), but that just means that the difference in the number of grams of fiber is so small that they both round to the same whole number of grams. (Iceberg is probably around .85 grams (which would round to 1 g, and be 3% of the 25 grams of fiber RDA for women) and romaine is probably an even 1.0 grams (which is 4% of the 25 gram fiber RDA for women).

Neither is a significant source of fiber at the level of a serving size - so I'll rely on other sources for fiber and eat whichever leafy greens I prefer. If I don't get to mix them, my preference would be iceberg.

11. 5-7 servings doesn't really mean 5-7 full-sized apples and tomatoes
Just eat as much as you can and you'll get close enough.

I did the juicer thing a while back and really felt the difference, but it was far too inconvenient to keep up. It took about 15 minutes and several gallons of water to clean the damn thing. Now I probably get 2 servings worth of vegetables and 2 fruits a day. That's plenty for me.

97. 6 ounces of juice or 1/2 cup of veggies or fruit = 1 serving.
A small salad is usually two or three servings by itself. It's easier to meet that target than it seems if you eat fruits and veggies as part of at least two meals per day.

24. some doctors say
that with fruit juice, your body is getting too much "fruit sugar" at once -- that's it's better to just eat the fruit.

they say that if you gonna drink the juice, dilute it with water which is what i do. i forgot, i drink either some peach or apple juice mixed half with water every day, but the juice would probably only amount to 2-3 ounces.

26. I believe a glass of juice may count as more than one serving
Depending on the size. So a big glass of orange juice in the morning will probably be two of those servings right off. I usually have vegetables on my sandwiches (lettuce and tomatoes mostly but other stuff) so that's another 1-2. Plus some kind of vegetables for dinner (and usually they are frozen, so I make the whole package and eat most of it, which is more than one serving as well). And then maybe some kind of fruit. Bananas on cereal works too.

I certainly don't do this every single day though.

I eat AT LEAST that many servings per day. It's my lifestyle. I pig out on fruits and vegetables so that I won't eat fattening foods. I'm pretty slim and healthy, so I think it works.

Some people can't figure out why they're fat, when they eat "normal" portions of "normal" foods (AKA huge portions of starch & grease & meat) like everyone else. The secret is that you really aren't supposed to eat like that (AKA "normal American food") if you want to maintain a healthy weight.

50. are you getting enough protein?
i don't eat the normal american diet. as far as my weight, it has remained the same for the last 8 years or so. it might vary 2-3 pounds, but that's it. so what i'm eating as far as staying the prpoper weight is working. i just worry about getting those fruits and veggies into my body.

i wonder if it counts if say you get 9 servings one day, then the next day you only get 2. does it carry over?

I'm no scientist, and I don't know many details about the research, but I've heard that a few times lately ...We do tend to eat a lot more animal protein than most of the rest of the world, that's for sure.

about the protein. then about 12 years ago, my doctor ran this special blood test. i was so low in amino acids. my doc said "this did not happen over night". that's when i started using a protein drink. i've been using "Pro Blend 55". it gives me 55 grams of protein which i think is enough. it really doesn't taste bad (i use chocolate). after so many years though, some days it turns me off. it's like if i drink it i'm gonna barf. i didn't have it yesterday, but i ate 1/3 lb piece of salmon, which i'm sure gave me enough protein for the day.

74. I'm sure it's fine to eat a lot of veggies one day, and none the next day, as long as it evens out.
I've been unsuccessful at many things in life, but I am successful at keeping my weight down. I try to eat small portions of most foods, and fill up on fruits and vegetables. Many protein sources don't have a ton of calories, so you can eat all the protein you need without going overboard on calories. Mostly, I avoid the starchy fillers like pasta, white bread, mashed potatoes, hash browns, breaded or deep-fried stuff. I try to avoid eggy foods like quiche or omelettes, but I'll have a little, sometimes. I avoid cheese, but small portions are okay, on occasion. A little bit of chocolate and candy and alcohol won't make you fat if you eat a plant based diet.

Eating fruits and vegetables becomes a habit. The longer you eat this way, the more you enjoy it. I'm convinced that eating tons of vegetables and fruit is essential weight control for people like me who love to stuff their face. :)

55. Serving Sizes...
The USDA Food Guide Pyramid recommends 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. And getting 5 to 9 servings is easier than you may think.

A serving size is:

* One medium-size fruit
* 1/2 cup raw, cooked, frozen or canned fruits (in 100% juice) or vegetables
* 3/4 cup (6 oz.) 100% fruit or vegetable juice
* 1/2 cup cooked, canned or frozen legumes (beans and peas)
* 1 cup raw, leafy vegetables
* 1/4 cup dried fruit

Edited on Thu Nov-08-07 06:28 PM by nam78_two
I eat one big salad a day and usually cook some veggies for dinner. It is easier when you are vegetarian perhaps -there are fewer options.

Fruits are harder for me because barring bananas, I have never liked most fruits much. I don't have much of a sweet tooth and that extends to fruits unfortunately :-/.

I don't have a problem eating healthy overall though-I am lucky in that I have never really like greasy, fried or sweet things very much. My mom was fairly strict about my diet when I was little and those habits seem to have stayed with me.

I fall off the wagon every few weeks or so, but when I'm on, which is about 75% of the time, I do eat this many fruits and veggies a day.

You wouldn't believe our grocery budget when hubby and I follow this requirement. Let's just say I'm glad we're undermortgaged for our income. Middle to low income people couldn't do it unless they ate canned vegetables (yech) or something. Just one example: last week we did some comparison shopping between Whole Foods and our local grocery store. It turned out they were fairly similar in price for the stuff we eat. But anyway, enough apples and pears (my 2 favorite fruits) to eat 1-2 per day for 2 people was over $25 in both places! And we generally eat what is in season and buy local produce when possible! Sheesh. It's ridiculous these days.

I'm a pudgy girl despite the vegetable eating, so I'm probably not that healthy anyway, right? ;-) At least that's what the people on the street think.

73. I generally eat what I crave
And lucky for me I do crave fruit. So some days I'll get 12 servings of fruit, but on other days I'll get 1 or 2. I'm not much of a veggie person, but I do enjoy a good salad once or twice a week. If I crave meat, I'll go eat it, same with chocolate. I could live off of beef, ripe fruits and dark chocolate.

I try to also keep a diet high in fiber (especially after a day where I crave meat mmm 4 by 4 at In N Out), so I try to keep whole grain products around me, dried fruits (apricots that are still a bit juicy and soft are my favorite), and nuts with skins still on.

I consider myself a vegetarian but I will eat fish sometimes. My basic diet is vegetarian, but it is not a religion. If I eat some fish once in a while I don't have to go to confession to atone for my sins.

I've been this sort of vegetarian as long as I can remember. My parents literally had to force me to eat meat if it looked at all like meat to me. Burgers and dogs were abstract enough to pass my lips until I was in my teens and then they became inedible as well. I eat what I find to be edible, and dead birds, chunks of cow, slices of pig just aren't in that category.

and it makes it harder for folks who really are vegetarians because a lot of restaurants (and host/esses) offer fish or poultry to their vegetarian guests. After all, a lot of "vegetarians" eat fish and poultry. We just walked out of a restaurant for that reason - because after you knocked off the vegetarian dishes that had poultry or fish, there was nothing left for my daughter to eat.

132. Serving Sizes...
The USDA Food Guide Pyramid recommends 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. And getting 5 to 9 servings is easier than you may think.

A serving size is:

* One medium-size fruit
* 1/2 cup raw, cooked, frozen or canned fruits (in 100% juice) or vegetables
* 3/4 cup (6 oz.) 100% fruit or vegetable juice
* 1/2 cup cooked, canned or frozen legumes (beans and peas)
* 1 cup raw, leafy vegetables
* 1/4 cup dried fruit

Virtually everyday.

today, when i have my chinese vegetables, it will probably equal about 5.

i have a soup recipe that helps.

1 qt. of fat free or low fat chicken broth
2-3 carrots cut into small pieces
1/4 -1/2 head of cabbage
1 cup of green beans (i use frozen)
1 zuccini sliced thin

i make it so thick that it's almost like a vegetable stew and it's delicious. i keep a big bowl in the refrigerator and just fill up a cup and put it in the microwave. sometimes i'll just eat a big bowl of it.

BTW. i learned this recipe from weight watchers. they say you can eat all you want of it.

114. fruit smoothies do 3 servings on their own.
So that takes care of the morning. A salad, veggies, fruit with dinner etc. and you're there. Ain't no big deal and it really is good for you.

120. fruit ice plain yogurt + blender
vary fruit according to season. It ain't exactly a recipe. Other people throw all sorts of stuff into the mix, I go for half-asleep in-a-rush simple. Bananas are good for consistency. You have to consume it on the spot or it gets sort of yucky. And keep your fruit out of the fridge as much as possible. They really prefer room temperature.

122. thanks. i'll give it a try,
but i think i'll substitute the yogurt with tofu. i try to avoid dairy products.

so maybe bananas, pineapple and strawberries or even blueberries. i don't mind a drink that's purple.

118. Easily
I think a "serving" is what, one cup of the item in question?

Today I had a large cup of orange juice (not from concentrate) and a bananna for breakfast.

Had a small green salad with my lunch (3)

Will probabably have another OJ sometime during the evening (4)

Having fresh peas with my dinner (5)

Simple.

123. wow. i'd be hungry.
i have a large cup of coffee for breakfast with either 1/2 cinammon raisin roll (zen -- no sugar) or 1/2 bagel. then about an hour later i have either peach or apple juice mixed 1/2 with water. i get up late -- around 9:30 am.

about 1/2 hour ago i had my protein drink. in a little while it's off to the chinese restaurant for my veggies.

138. I'm trying. 1 serving is pretty small, actually (1/2 cup). My servings....
are usu. 1 cup, so that's 2 veggies right there.

One large apple = 2 fruit servings. (one medium apple is 1 serving)

I am on Weight Watchers, which requires 5 servings of fruits & veggies per day. I NORMALLY eat about 3 - 4 servings, when not on WW.

One large salad probably equals about 3 or so veggie servings.

I'm one of those rare male sufferers of IBS. Without going into much detail, eating too much of certain things leads to pain like you can't imagine.

I try to get one serving in the morning and another at dinner, but that's generally all I can take. I use vitamin supplements to try and bridge some of the gap.

150. I live on a college campus so it's difficult
But when I graduate and have a place to actually cook my own food, I can definitely see myself being able to do that.

Right now I'm working on acquiring a taste for as many vegetables as possible. A few years ago I would never have touched onions and bell peppers. Now I love bell peppers and onions are pretty good too if they're not too strong. Broccoli and red onions I still don't particularly care for.

155. oh yeah, and regularly.
and i still have space for lots of carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. throughout the day you'd easily find me grazing on avocados and pumpkin seeds and walnuts and garbanzo beans and cucumbers and strawberries and carrots and bananas and spinach and celery and whole wheat bread and tofu and steak and potatoes and pork ribs and french fries and chow fun... hmm, i guess i do eat a lot.
but i'm always conscientious enough to save room for drugs. it's the little things in life we must save time for.

163. I'm finding that most of the restaurants I go to
have really tasty salads that I actually like, from fast food to sit down casual places. For instance, today I had a salad at Chevy's, a Mexican chain here in California, with an apple chipotle dressing, grilled chicken, mixed greens, avacados, grilled onions, cheese, and pine nuts. Tasty! Even at McDonalds, I can get an Asian chicken salad that is good tasting.
