For those of you who are so culturally deprived that you never watched Star Trek, most of the crew members who wear red shirts are the security personnel. They are the first ones to be killed in pointless deaths, early in the episodes, to prove how "realistic" the show is.

It pervades the Star Trek universe. When the female character Jadzia Dax was killed on her wedding day on Deep Space Nine fans said "That's what she gets for wearing a red wedding dress on a Star Trek show."

It's a perfect metaphor for our involvement in the Middle East.
