Stephen King Sounds Off: "I Suggested Jenna (Bush) Be Waterboarded"
Stephen King Sounds Off: "I Suggested Jenna (Bush) Be Waterboarded"
Time | Gilbert Cruz | November 26, 2007 04:31 PM

You know, this morning, the two big stories on CNN are Kanye West's mother, who died, apparently, after having some plastic surgery. The other big thing that's going on is whether or not this cop (Drew Peterson) killed his... wife. And meanwhile, you've got Pakistan in the midst of a real crisis, where these people have nuclear weapons that we helped them develop. You've got a guy in charge, who's basically declared himself the military strongman and is being supported by the Bush administration, whose raison d'etre for going into Iraq was to spread democracy in the world.

So you've got these things going on, which seem to me to be very substantive, that could affect all of us, and instead, you see a lot of this back-fence gossip. So I said something to the Nightline guy about waterboarding, and if the Bush administration didn't think it was torture, they ought to do some personal investigation. Someone in the Bush family should actually be waterboarded so they could report on it to George. I said, I didn't think he would do it, but I suggested Jenna be waterboarded and then she could talk about whether or not she thought it was torture. And then the guy from Nightline said, "Well, obviously you've not been watching World News Tonight with Charlie Gibson." But I do -- I watch 'em all!

1. How much do I love Stephen King?
I read The Tommyknockers all the way to the end, that's how much.

I love it when people like King have eff-you money.

15. You're far stronger than me in that case
I like Stephen King, but I can never finish his books. His books are some of the best written, provided you stop before he finishes them. For having such brilliant build-ups, I swear I never never seen an author with such ... positively wretched endings. It's almost like he gets bored and stops trying.

That aside, I still like Stephen King. And stuff like this only helps to convince me I should go out and finish the Dark Tower series.

18. I think he loses his nerve on endings sometimes.
Remember the ending of Carrie? Of Cujo? Of The Dead Zone? What good stuff.

But then there's IT, and the tommyknockers, and Dreamcatcher (OMG). At times, I like Richard Bachman better than King.

If you want to chase Roland the rest of the way, who can stop you?

25. Don't get me started on IT.
Yeah... about the point the giant hollowed out shell of a metaphysical space turtle gets involved, you lost me.

Dead Zone? Good stuff. The screen adaption was even decent, but then again I'll watch anything with Christopher Walken in it, so I may be a bit biased.

I agree, The Stand is one of the best - read it one summer in high school and started my lifelong addiction to King's books!

47. "Thinner" was fantastic! Great end!
And "The Running Man" was good, too. BTW, I still won't walk near a sewer grate, thanks to "It" & Penneywise the Clown.

Agree, though that some of his endings are anti-climatic. I haven't read King in many, many years.

2. "Well, obviously you've not been watching World News Tonight with Charlie Gibson."
Was that the guy from Nightline's actual response? If so wow. Just wow. Just when you think our so-called "newscasters" couldn't make themselves look any more stupid and arrogant they go and prove you wrong again.

24. Agreed. GO SEE THE MIST. I saw it today and was floored.
The Mist, like the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers, is a wonderful study in human nature and what it takes to lift the veil to reveal the "noble savage" underneath. While the movie has its creature/CGI moments, it is more about the characters and smartly does not reveal all letting our imagination magnify the horror rather than have it all laid out for us.

If you are tired of torture porn horror and wish to see a movie that reaffirms ones faith in the horror genre, then go see the Mist. It will have you thinking and discussing hotly after the movie has ended.

26. Normally I'm iffy about screen adaptions of Stephen King
(Dead Zone being a big exception. I'll watch anything with Christopher Walken.)

But I just might have to drag myself out there to go see it then.

28. Too Many Barbaras
You have to clarify which one you're talking about. Jenna is the only one of that name. Mind you, Barbara Sr. could probably take waterboarding and come up spitting at her torturer. That's one tough old bat -- despise her to the bottom of my soul, I do, but I'll give her that.

41. I thought that must be it
I let my emotion have free reign when I'm reading. It makes for a fuller more interesting experience. That was one instance where I wish I could have contained them a bit.

Of all the Stephen King books I've read, none has ever evoked that type of emotional response from me.
