I'm not making fun of the fact that the man had some sort of cancerous lesion, who the hell wants to go through that? At least he had a health plan that saved his ass from biting it.

But when I look at him, it is Very Noticeable, and frankly, I would probably feel the same if he had a MOLE that covered an eight of his face.

Look at it, there's been some sort of reconstructive surgery, and part of his Face is MISSING. I remember when he was wearing bandages a few years ago, and felt sorry for him.

I guess what I'm saying is, is that I think Americans won't vote for someone that they think has physical problems, or is disfigured. It doesn't make it right, just the way people ARE.

They even hid FDR's Wheelchair from the Public for the same reason, though he was instrumental in helping those people with Polio and other ambulatory problems.

But McCain's face just gives me the creeps.

Nevermind that he's Crazier than a shithouse rat.

'McCain's Insane' is what I'd use if I were running against him, still wants to kill people even after experiencing the horrors of being a POW firsthand.

For that I admire him, for everything else, he can go piss up a rope. :)

Does the face thing bother you?

1. I never could understand how this guy got popular
I think the thing I resent him most for is local. He worked on increasing the air traffic to and from National Airport (that's what I call it) which makes life in and around Alexandria, VA irritating, to say the least.

8. He Lost Face A Long Time Ago
That he has lost part of his face due to cancer doesn't bother me.

That he has lost face by embracing Falwell and (literally) Bush does. I never agreed with him politically, but at one time I had some respect for him. No more. He has lost face.

9. I wouldn't know, I'm biased against him because of his temper
I do not want this man's finger on the nuclear button. I just don't. Everything else, even the Roe v. Wade stuff, is completely secondary. I just do not want this man as Commander in Chief.

And that's not snark, Arianna Huffington can vouch for the guy's short fuse. I'm sure the time as a POW had something to do with that but, sympathy only runs so far.

21. After I was drafted during Nam and did my service to my country
Edited on Mon Feb-19-07 05:58 PM by symbolman
and received my Honorable Discharge I went to work for a year at the Downy Veterans Hospital in Illinois.

My Job was to take care of over 300 Veterans who had been driven insane or were physically Destroyed by WAR.

I was to watch them as they couldn't function, and see if I noticed pain that they weren't capable of telling folks where it hurt.

I became a virtual EMPATH, and can still spot a sick person from a mile away.

Saved a lot of lives, and some of these folks had nothing left of their frame but physical pain, so YEAH, I KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT IT.

You're missing my point, talk all you want about Higher Ideals, the truth is we are judged by our looks, it's unfortunate in many ways, but it's the way it is. Some studies have shown that Presidents are chosen due to WHO has the Better HAIR.

SO don't come down on ME for being HONEST about these things, if you can't deal with that reality, don't go sanctimonious on someone who'd been in the trenches.

I've done more for the disabled than many people. But I'm also the first guy to walk over to a person in a wheelchair and engage them, while others, who have "HIGHER IDEALS" IGNORE THEM.

I've unloaded entire ships full of wheelchair people, and unlike some people I understand the language of Spastic people, all the gutteral noises make sense to me, but I don't PRETEND that they are speaking normally, I wouldn't INSULT them that way, and they KNOW IT.

I wish some people would GET REAL.

I appreciate the positive comments, especially that poster that says McCain may be a ticking Cancer Time Bomb. (Sorry for your pain)

And I DID preface this post with the fact that McCain is INSANE, and I've worked with those folks too, getting them into halfway houses, new glasses, teeth, medical care, etc.

But I DON'T WANT ONE FOR PRESIDENT.

Sheesh, I knew the sanctimony would get thick on this thread. If anyone should be embarrassed it's people that talk bullshit when so much is on the LINE.

Thanks for anyone that is HONEST. :)

27. I thought I remembered you being a vet
and generally being compassionate about veterans' issues, which is why I was so surprised to see "McCain's face just gives me the creeps" coming from you.

If you are having a personal reaction to it that you're having trouble dealing with, I can understand wanting to talk that out. This just struck me in the context of the OP not as admitting a shortcoming in yourself to overcome, but rather repeating a meme as if it were a justifiable reason to not want to vote for him.

Maybe it was the way things were capitalized for emphasis.

I had a coworker once who lost a major part of his face in combat. I'm trying to picture how that OP would sound to him, if he were on DU at the moment reading it. Or how it would sound to a DUer who has a family member who's got facial scars from an IED. I don't like the thought of them reading something along the lines of Who's going to vote for them, they're missing their FACE - it creeps me out!

collateral damage, you know?

28. It has nothing to do with wanting to talk out a personal failing
Just stating the obvious, that someone disfigured is not something people will vote for in the Highest office in the land.

I thought I was pretty clear about it being the American public that won't go for it, not me.

Max Cleveland has showed that integrity will overpower any challenge, and by the way, it didn't stop the RIGHT from skewering him, you think they'll look past McCain's disfigurement?

Like I said, I took care of 300 vets who suffered from all kinds of injuries, people that didn't even look like People anymore.

But there's a basic revulsion that is inherent in the hard wiring of the brain over faces, those Monster movies don't exist in a void.

I don't think I said it gives me the Creeps, but that deep down inside it gives joe sixpack the creeps and I take everything into account.

I wouldn't care if he looked like Robert Redford, the UGLY is INSIDE of the guy, to the bone.

Thanks for serving.

32. you did make it personal, perhaps without realizing it
"I don't think I said it gives me the Creeps"

It's right in your OP: "McCain's face just gives me the creeps."

Anyway, I think he's a hypocritical corrupt politician who has pathetically attempted to redefine himself after the Keating Five scandal as the poster boy for ethics (and we need to keep that in the public eye because the savings and loan scandal was a disgrace). Also, he is a right wing fundamentalist who is a threat to women's rights, gay rights, POW rights, etc. And he's a racist ("gook." Ugh.).

He claims that he can identify a gay person "by behavior and by attitudes"
He has a zero environmental rating (Time magazine wrote that Senator McCain's "environmental record would make Teddy Roosevelt cringe")
He has repeatedly voted against minimum wage increases
He has repeatedly (roughly 90% of the time) taken an anti-choice position on senate votes
He backs the teaching of "intelligent design" in science class
His comments on Chelsea Clinton were misogynstic. (In truth those comments alone would have earned yours, but like I said, the collateral damage affects others).

Also, I'm not a big fan of his mafia ties. In 1995, McCain sent birthday regards, and regrets for not attending, to Joseph "Joe Bananas" Bonano, the head of the New York Bonano crime family, who had retired to Arizona.

So, you know, plenty of reasons to hate on the guy. Let's post about them.

I did say that, and it is Personal, that Frankenstein looking son of a bitch gives me not only the Creeps, BUT the Willies too..

You want to help people, then go Work with the Vets, those that were blown up that Live in Washington, Across from the Walter Reed, where they have Mice and Mold, and walk miles to see a doctor across the street.. as reported on Keith Olbermann tonight

Made my blood boil.

But, I've done my time personally, and if I say that McCain is a fucking Frankenstein, well, we both fought for freedom of speech now didn't we..

When I call ALL THE VETS 'frankensteins', well then you might have a point..

Otherwise, it IS my opinion. People that eat onions and breathe in my Face Give me the Creeps, so now I'm supposed to FEEL BAD for saying it? Apologise to EVERY onion eater? Absurd.

I don't. It's PC bullshit, and it's why liberals lose, they cater to every fucking person on the planet, while the right wing goose steps all over everyone.

Thanks for all the other reasons to dislike that Freak, and once again, my Point is that the American People will NOT elect a disfigured person, sorry, just the way it is. Right OR Left. For President.

Edited on Mon Feb-19-07 10:39 AM by Beausoir
McInsane's cancer was very deep, that's why they carved out his face.

Same with my cousin. They carved him up very deeply, too. 3 years later, the cancer returned with an incredible vengeance and spread to the liver. The prognosis is 3-6 months. This type of cancer is notoriously unresponsive to chemo and radiation.

IF....IF...McInsane's cancer re-establishes itself, the outlook would be scary.

I don't care what he looks like...but I do care if he is a ticking time-bomb cancer-wise. That's the deeper issue and at least deserves some thought and discussion.

You have my sympathies, I too have a cousin, same age as me, on the way out.

I gave him a book that I think everyone should read, and gave it to my dad as well when he was going.

It's by Kubbler Ross, "On Death and Dying" and if you want to enjoy life, it's a good read for that as well.

Yes the ticking time bomb is a major problem, funny how Cheney is no Problem, only two Borg Heart Clicks away from death.. imagine what all that medication does to his mind, who knows what kind of a chemical Broth he swallows each day..

Thanks for the common sense.

They will vote for him if told to, and they will ignore his physical defects if FAUX and limpballs don't seem to think it's a big deal. Obviously, they are superficial enough not to vote against someone for such a reason, but they have to be led in that direction first.
