US charges five as illegal Venezuelan agents

Washington - US authorities have arrested three Venezuelans and an Uruguayan for allegedly operating illegally in the United States on behalf of the Venezuelan government to cover up the smuggling of cash to an Argentine presidential candidate.

A fifth defendant has yet to be taken into custody.

The four men in custody appeared Wednesday in federal court on charges of acting and conspiring as agents of the Venezuelan government without notifying US authorities, the US Justice Department said. The four men were denied bail.
