Veteran Dies of War Injuries
World War II injuries. Really.

Obituaries Saturday, December 8, 2007; Page B07

Joseph E. O'Mahony
Foreign Service Officer

Joseph E. O'Mahony, 82, an economics and political officer in the State Department, died Nov. 26 at his Bethesda home of an infection related to wounds he received while serving in the Army during World War II.

Mr. O'Mahony was injured in combat while serving in Europe, just before the Battle of the Bulge. A leg was amputated, and he had shrapnel throughout his body. A private first class, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. "He died from wounds 60 years later," said his daughter-in-law, Miriam Shepard-O'Mahony.

He was born in Indianapolis and received a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Illinois in 1949. He attended graduate school at Yale University.

Mr. O'Mahony joined the Foreign Service in 1956 and served as an economic and political officer in the State Department in Washington. He also had assignments at U.S. embassies in Trinidad, Chile, India, Hong Kong and South Korea before retiring in 1988.
