There was a fight on the Q train. The last car was filled with people rolling toward Brooklyn.

A young man, accompanied by his girlfriend, had just been wished Merry Christmas by another group on the train.

The young man happily answered back with, “Happy Chanukah.”

That’s when all hell broke loose.

One of a group of other young people on the train immediately hiked up his sleeve to reveal a tattoo of Christ. Fourteen men and women jumped the “Happy Chanukah” man, yelling, “He said, ‘Happy Hanukkah, that’s when the Jews killed Jesus…’ dirty Jews and Jew bitches.”

Much screaming, bellowing, blood loss and broken bones later…

The man who said “Happy Chanukah” is Walter Adler, 23, an honors student at Hunter College, who now has a broken nose and a split lip.

There is a time and place for everything. Had he been the first to speak, it would have seemed to me to have been a nice gesture to wish strangers a "happy Chanukah".

But when the other guy says "merry Christmas", it would seem improper to me to start a religious debate. Which is what he insisted on doing. Arguing such a thing ranks up there with "f**k off" or "Heal, dammit, Heal !" as a response to "merry Christmas". As our hero found out.

I'm perfectly aware of the Happy Hannukah/ Merry Christmas dynamic. Still, it seems to me that the crew that rolled these guys were itching to throw a beatdown. It could have been Happy Hannukah, or a sidelong glance, or an accidental brush of the foot. It's a wrong place wrong time thing, not a war on Christmas thing.

This sort of shit happens all the time in New York. In this case, somebody in the tabs thought it was worth publicizing, likely due to the strange ethnic dynamic. I git stabbed on the 7 Line by a group of Chinese gangsters. They were like "What's up, whiteboy?" But it wasn't really a hate crime. They didn't attack me because I was white. It was just wrong place wrong time. That the racial or ethnic dynamic should emerge in such cases is just a by-product of the way New York runs. It is not the proximate cause of the attack. I would say that's the case here as well.

To that extent, I would also call into question the vision of a happy, integrated New York. NYC is ridiculously segregated to this day in terms of where people live and even who people generally associate with. This is especially true when you get into the outer boros (where the assailants live), but it is also obviously true of Manhattan. Outer boros culture remains fervidly racist and anti-semitic, especially in the historically white enclaves.
