:woohoo: I can't wait!! .

Schools here are closing early, some jobs are getting out early...

Forecast near me in Mass.

Heavy Snow Warning in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to 11 PM EST this evening...

Thursday: partly sunny with a chance of snow in the morning, then snow in the afternoon.
Snow accumulation of 4 to 6 inches. Much colder with highs in the upper 20s.
North winds 5 to 10 mph, becoming east in the afternoon. Chance of snow near 100 percent.

Thursday Night: cloudy. Snow likely in the evening, then a chance of snow after midnight.
Total accumulation of 6 to 10 inches possible. Lows in the lower 20s.
Near steady temperature in the mid 20s. East winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 70 percent.

And then a Nor'easter for Saturday!! :applause:

Looks like New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island will be getting dumped on!

I'm not usually happy about snow but I'm looking forward to this today. :D

1. Except for that evening commute...
Nothing like Rt. 95 in heavy snow. Looks like I"m taking the back roads through Lexington...with my Swedish car (a saab) and snow tires I actually enjoy snow driving :)

7. The worst of it will be during the evening commute!
Be careful out there or leave work early!

I would leave work early if it was me but then again; I'm a chicken. :P

My car barely is 6 inches above the pavement so I don't want to drive in this.

Especially on Rt 95 at rush hour! Forgetaboutit! :D

5. My husband is supposed to catch a flight out of Newark tonight.
I noticed that the first leg of the flight, Nashville to Newark, is already cancelled this morning.

This storm looks like it might pass 20 miles south of traditional Central New York snow belt.

It came down the thruway belt, verses coming across Lake Ontario and down I-81. I hate when that happens. At least it is light and looks to be clearing to the west so when I leave work at 1AM it shouldn't be to bad.

which shows I should watch and drops the ones I want to watch later :grr:.. One night I went to bed with 50 "stored" shows (including the whole "War" series)..and the next morning? Nada...Zilch..Zippo..Kaput !!

They did a service upgrade Nov 1, and since my machine was a first generation one, it did not take kindly to the "upgrade" so they are giving me a new one.. I would not be getting it if I had to pay extra :)

ut the prediction is for 4 to 6 inches and the maps show the storm passing just south of Syracuse. There may be some rough driving on 81 and 481 for a few hours just as the storm passes through due to snow fall rates.

with no thaws in between. You needed a periscope to drive around here because so much snow was piled up at intersections! I wondered at the time if Watertown was still there because at that point you guys had an accumulation of 10 feet!

18. I'm right behind ya.
Supposed to get hit late Sat and into Sunday up here. Already have 2 feet on the ground from the last storm.

Snow thrower and generator fueled - check.
Shovels handy - check.
Plenty of propane on hand for the portable heater and stove - check.
Food stocked - check.

Only remaining thing to do is to make sure the garage roof is shoveled off.

34. No teen handy, just the wife and I.
And the cats just can't handle a shovel right.

I stay away from rock salt. Does a number on the walkway and is very bad for the lawn come spring.

Speaking of which:

I live on the top of a hill (town road so plowing out is not a problem)overlooking a large pond. Last year a guy "from away" bought some of the shore line below me and built a million dollar home (just finished it this summer). The way the ditching works is that the melt runs down the hill and into a cross ditch on the main road (his house is on the other side of the road. Last winter was not a big one, only had a couple of storms and never had more than 6 inches on the ground at any one time. This year looks to be a typical winter where by spring we'll have 4-6 feet of the stuff sitting there by the time it starts to melt (snow banks along our road are already 4+ feet high). That being the case, Mr. "Away" is gong to get a surprise along about April.

Edited on Thu Dec-13-07 08:23 AM by Tandalayo_Scheisskop
I live just a smidge down and to the left of that Rt. 80 shield, in the top picture, and we are getting 5-8. Fucking winter wonderland time.

Which means that if the past is prologue, my two computer UPS's will be getting a workout. Power and Light doesn't spend much on infrastructure out here. The auto accidents ought to start any moment now, too. Sadly, the days of skillful and intrepid winter drivers are gone. Now, it's just an army of people, in vehicles, who wait near a tree or utlility pole for the signal, then they drive into their designated obstacle. Seemingly all at once.

On edit: At times like these, I always recommend this slick and FREE program. Best weather program. Hands down. When I worked for Don Law, doing outdoor concerts back in the late 80's, we would have given our eye teeth for this thing:

People driving SUV's with four wheel drive think that it's like a trucks 4 wheel drive
and they have a lot of accidents in these storms. Also people without snow tires and just
plain idiots who don't know how to drive in the snow.

My local news said that it looks like snow over NY & NJ but it wasn't hitting the ground yet.

I live in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. It's been snowing for the last 4 days on and off, and that's quite ordinary. We've picked up about 8 to 10 inches in that time. Not a big deal. A foot? Bigger deal. 18 inches or more? Very big deal.

8 - 10 inches is a big deal in populated area's. Even in Vermont.

37. Nothing to "woohoo" about snow when you understand the ramifications of a storm.
Yes, all that fun snow will kill and injure people in car accidents and others will die or be hurt just shoveling it. People's roofs will be damaged and there will be other property damage and inconvenience. We need it for the moisture it provides, but I see nothing to celebrate about a snow storm.

43. Why would roofs be damaged? I like snow and so do the ski resorts!
Snow isn't going to cause property damage unless someone doesn't keep their house repaired!

If that was the case, then houses in New England wouldn't be standing for as long as they do.

Many people like to ski and snowboard or just look at it! It's pretty!! ;)

Or ... the little "snow thrower" ... a Toro electric that works like a charm, and wasn't awfullly expensive either. It's light weight, maneuverable, and tosses the snow at least 30 feet.

and said; "Don't worry about it! You just make the hot chocolate." I have a big, strong teenager
and a shovel! LOL! So, I'm not worried about it. Besides, the workout will be good for him! ;)

Edited on Thu Dec-13-07 08:51 AM by radfringe
other national reports saying 5-8... local weather is saying 6-9, I guess they are splitting the difference... ennywho - all I can say is "too much"

we're just north west of Wilkes-barre... about below the "S" in Wilkes-Barre on this map

on edit: started out as sleety type snow around 7:30, turned over to snow by 8ish - coming down heavy right now, have close to 2 inches on the ground

59. Thanks for the update! We only have clouds right now...
I think Connecticut be will getting the most accumulation, according to the reports. But my area
says up to ten inches possible, so we'll see. It changes all the time, it seems. And you know they
can be off by miles. Where I am, I'm right on the edge between the 6-8" and the 6-10".

Stay warm! Make a snowman! :P

Some had bad icing, we are a bit north and had six inches of nice powdery stuff on top of eight or so from before.

and that the heaviest snow will be at 3 PM to 7 PM (2 "'s an hour- white out conditions) and
Rhode Island may get a foot of snow! She said if you can leave work early then do it.

But this looks like a massive storm! It's coming all the way from Cleveland!

71. I am in Western MA - I LOVE snow this time of year

I love snow in the Christmas season. I just put our tree our tree up yesterday. I am going to make a big pot of turkey
soup & I have a fresh loaf of bread. I will probably take my Eskies for a run up at a local preserve later.

This weekend looks like we could get walloped.

And, don't anybody complain to me about driving & shoveling. I just completely totaled my truck last week in a storm & I have a long
driveway I shovel, myself. I know the downfalls! But, if it is going to come, why not enjoy the beauty & wonder of it.

Nothing like a good snowstorm!

I love the way it looks on the tree's and before the plows get to it. It's also quieter
here with all the cars off the roads. ;) It's not snowing here yet but it will be soon...
I have to make a last store run and then I'm in for the rest of the day. I hope you didn't
get hurt when you crashed your truck. :( Have fun at the park! :hi:

This year is looking GOOD!

(Thanks, btw. I didn't get hurt in the accident. I was shocked when they told me it was a total loss because the truck didn't look
that bad. But, apparently the undercarriage was totaled by a huge rock that destroyed everything in the entire front! Good thing, though. It slowed me down. I went down the embankment to a river. Oh, well. After twenty odd years of driving in storms, I am lucky I wasn't injured)!

103. We had about 8 inches early in November
but then it warmed up and melted most of it. The little bit we got on Tuesday was the first snow in five or six weeks, and since the temp was still around 35 much of it didn't stick or turned into slush. We have none forecast for the next week.

I think they've gotten quite a bit more on the other side of the mountains, on the Prince William Sound side, but over here it's looking pretty bleak.

Easier to deal with than the ice storm that came through the Midwest on Monday night/Tuesday...we just got a relatively glancing blow compared to Oklahoma and Kansas, and there were still plenty of people without power around here for a day or two. Ice storms are just atrocious to deal with...

Traffic is backed up and really heavy on 95 in the B-Town beltway. Trains are all delayed
on the Franklin (missed the name of the other line)... Hartford, CT. already has 6 inches
on the ground... and the gas Company finally got here and are saying they don't "see" a problem. :eyes:

Uh, no heat IS a problem, moran!!!!

118. Ok...two more update pics but my flash/batteries died...
My car

The other car

We only have about 4 inches or so... but I can hear sleet hitting what is on the ground.

The Pike and RT. 95 are at a virtual crawl. Glad I'm not out there!

Possibly, from what I'm hearing on the news right now... heavier snowfall is on the way.

119. Near 50 today & tomorrow w/chance of rain - Dallas
Sunny & warm..but been chilly this week. Took my granddaughter for a walk earlier, she always falls asleep in the stroller. Snow is pretty & have great memories of it, but also have memories of miserable cold and scraping ice from the windshield & those bitter Northern winds across the prairie. Don't miss that part. But no snow angels in Dallas either.
Be careful & stay warm.
Merry Christmas.

123. Merry Christmas to you too! ~ Thanks!
:D

. .

It looked nice out here earlier but now it's dark, so I can't really see anything.

It seems to be slowing down some, last I looked, although it will be snowing for

the next 3 hours. I hate the ice scraping too but it has to be done! :P

It sounds like you had a nice day with your grand daughter! :hi:

120. I hate the stuff
after 51 winters I don't care if I ever see another snowstorm. Sure some folks enjoy it but for the most part they don't have to plow it or shovel it. If it rained instead it wouldn't hurt my feelings.

121. After 53 winters, I still love the first 'real' snowfall !
I have to shovel it everytime! :P But it's ok... it just gets old after it's day after day

of snowfall but that hasn't been happening that much here in the last few years.

This snow is powder so not that bad. We can take it! It's the heavy stuff that sucks!

122. No. It's 72 degrees and we're having a historic drought in NE Georgia.

We MIGHT get some rain on Saturday. It hasn't rained for weeks. :( Please send us some snow! :)

We are on a total outdoor watering ban and are conserving indoors (residents, businesses, institutions and industires) like crazy.

If it snows here, it usually happens in the winter months of February and March. I'd love a nice snowstorm but it is sort of dangerous because so many people here are not used to driving in snow if any happend to stick to the roads.

124. I feel bad for you all, CottonBear ...
I think the whole country is hoping you get rain soon and lots of it! :(

If I could send some of this your way, I would.

But, in the meanwhile, here's a snowman just for you!

127. No, actually we're thawing out
Thank goodness! Saw the sun for the first time in almost a week today. The ice on the trees and lines and everywhere else is thawing and falling, it has sounded like a hail storm as one inch thick shards of ice plummeted down. Really quite cool. hope we get more tomorrow.

130. Are you in Kansas or Oklahoma? - Glad you're thawing out finally!
You must be so happy you're coming out of that deep freeze!! Brrr!!

It's 23 here but with the storm, it feels like 14 degree's.

I'm cold.

I've had the windows cracked slightly. Time to close them all up!

Hope you don't have any damage from all that ice! :hi:

131. Very happy to be coming out of the deep freeze
I live in Mid Missouri, and had around an inch or more of ice come down over the past five days. This storm was slow and stubborn and didn't leave graciously, we got a nasty case of freezing fog last night. I've got some big tree limbs down, and a limb hung up on a wire, but thankfully I haven't lost electricity. I figure sometime tomorrow or Saturday the electric company will come by to cut the limb off. My orchard didn't take any sort of fatal damage, though a couple of trees will be slowed up a bit.

All in all, I rode it out OK. Just south of me they really got nailed. There was a swath of homes north of Jefferson City about thirty miles long with no power for days. Fulton Missouri looks like a tornado came through.

If you want firewood cheap, bring a truck and a saw. However there are some pieces that fell that are really gnarly, literally. Interesting enough to make something in the woodshop.

Enjoy your snow, stay warm and safe. I'll see what I can do sending you some warmer weather when we get done with it.

I believe we got 9 inches of SNOW! :P

And it's still snowing... The snowbanks are up about 3 feet and we actually have some drifting!

But it looks mighty pretty outside and I haven't heard ONE CAR go by in at least two hours!!

Silence Is Golden! :P
