Quickly sliding into CHAOS...
Rational thought is lost. People lose the ability to distinguish right from wrong. Our economy deteriorates rapidly. We look for enemies to blame, both foreign and domestic.

Our political leaders are unable to come to a consensus about anything. Problems worsen. Neglect of the citizens leads to desperation.

There are no brakes on the slide. There is only the sudden stop at the bottom. People look for guns and violence as the solution to their insecurities.

I wonder if we are quickly sliding into this state of chaos?

If it seems to you that I am not very optimistic about our future, then you are correct.

1. Well on the other hand - humanity is a blight on existence
So a slide into chaos and collapse might not be a bad thing.

I just hope the gun wielding insecure get me early on.

10. Is that the criterion?
Sure I do, as do the vast majority of people.

That however is largely irrelevant. We have had far worse periods of unemployment and poverty with even less in the way of safety nets before and yet American society has not crumbled into some kind of post-apocalyptic Mad Max fantasy. Your personal angst and despair may be real, but that does not mean it is enough to make civilization fall to its knees.

And the point remains - how is it a sign of insecurity to own a gun and presumably NOT a sign of insecurity to predict some coming descent into barbarism?

13. So is insecurity a bad thing?
isnt it a human emotion that signals uncerenty, danger, or at the very least changing conditions?

My got a job question was retorical for ( you and your family have a bright future and or present)

Try to make a career change in your mid 50s and see what its like.

I dont think it is a sign of insecurity to own guns. I used to live in the city and I thought there was no need. After living in the wilderness for 5 years I now have a very different opinion. Mountain lions arent going to wait for me to call animial welfair.

If there is confusion its my fault, sorry, a little cloudy in the gray cells today.

15. Why so personal
Because I don;t think we're about to return to the dark ages it must be because everything is wonderful for me (and by extension I must of course be too clueless and parochial to consider factors external to my own wellbeing)? How about I just don't see it as at all likely that we will see any serious societal instability? How about that that is based on historical precedent where instability of that magnitude almost always requires economic and political disaster far worse than we have or can reasonably expect to see? I left school in an area and time with 20%+ unemployment undergoing serious structural changes to the economy (NE England at the height of the Thatcherite Revolution). There was no descent into anarchy - although the miners's strike had some moments. Russia just went through completely monumental changes with far less of a safety net than we have. No descent into anarchy. Yes Bush has scrwed the pooch and yes we'll have some tougher times than we otherwise would have getting through it, but there's a big gulf between some hard economic choices including a lot of personal hardship by those negatively affected by the necessary changes, and the complete collapse of society as many on this thread are predicting.

I was responding to a post wherwhich specifically referred to "insecure gunwielders" and yet predicted mass unrest. I was simply pointing out the irony.

5. No.
I live in an apartment complex with a gate at hte front - but it's not exactly secure.

I hope to be killed early on, if society collapses, in case you missed my meaning.

2. pessimism is the new optimism.
I think your assesments are spot on, and its going to get a whole lot worse.

Gated communities might want to consider additional security.

7. The controls we've been given don't seem to work.
We voted people in to fix things, and they really haven't. That's assuming our vote even counts. I think they want us to turn to guns, we're being herded that way, which is why I won't. But I'm not the only cow in the chute.

12. do what most Americans do - change the channel
This is what we've become as a culture,

first go to your doc and get something for the anxiety, like klonopin. Then get yourself a nice high-def tv. also a DVR or tivo. doesn't matter if you have the money or can't afford it- just charge it.

Tune into "A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila" or "America's Next Top Model"

If something unpleasant comes on tv, about homelessness or veteran's brain injuries, just change the channel- there are so many to choose from!!

Really, we are a nation of people who , well, just don't want to be bothered with all those problems.

Not chaos, numbness and alienation from the pressing issues. thats my take.
