Asthma...and Flovent inhaler...please comment if you have any experience with this...
My four year old son has been diagnosed with asthma (he has had two sever attacks triggered by viral infection..colds..in the past two months and is fine between.

The doc. would like him to start daily (2x morn and nite) use of Flovent/prednisone puffer.

I would really appreciate hearing anybodys experience with this...pro or con.

MANY thanks!

1. I take Flovent..
Once a day when I feel like I need it. Most of the time I try to take Singulair on a daily basis. Seems to work best for me.

But my experience was a good one. My daughter who is now 6 uses the Flovent inhaler only during the flu season since she was 4. PM me for more details.

Suffice to say, we have not had to go to the ER in almost two years.

3. My stepdaughter is 5 and has been on flovent for more than a year.
(Before that, she had something else administered via nebulizer.) She takes 2X every other day, 2X twice a day if she's sick. Plus an albuterol rescue inhaler that she's only had to use a few times.

Her asthma was bad enough when she was an infant that it really didn't matter what sort of side effects the medication would have--she'd be dead without it. It's gotten better, but even now, if she goes more than that every other day without taking the meds, she gets really wheezy. Luckily, side effects have been minimal.

You may notice sleep changes for awhile--my SD became a bit of a night owl. (She goes to bed earlier now that she's in kindergarten.)

4. My mother
who's had bad asthma for 74 years, started using it last year and loves it. It's made a huge difference.

hes only had 2 attacks in 2 months and no other problems.
i dont understand why they wouldnt give him either a short term inhaler for emergencies or have you keep an nebulizer in the house.

ive had asthma my whole life, ive had most of the treatments at one time or another and never any adverse reaction to any of them including inhaled steroids.
i believe you should only take as much medication as necessary though and to have someone on inhaled steroids from the age of 4 every day because they have occasional symptoms seems excessive.

good luck

6. More details....
Thanks to all ...

They have given us a nebulizer for home use and albuterol inhaler for emergencies. My son has had several colds and they seem to triger the severe asthma attacks so the Dr. wants us help him avoid the viral infections effect to begin with by use of the anti-inflamitory (Flovent) daily.

Your right though it does seem alot.
