Has Gore ever responded to the reich-wing "he flies private jets" smear?
When I google this, I just get a bunch of Rush O'Hannity links.

I'm assuming this is just more right-wing lard-ass deflection of the real issue of man-made catastrophic global warming, but it'd be nice to have a source to throw back at them.

Anybody got one?

1. Why bother?
You're not going to convince the idiots who spout this garbage that travel overseas often requires the use of a flying object.

I suppose that he could swim the 4,000 miles to Europe....

13. Umm... he usually does fly commercial
It occasionally makes the news - - like when the DHS pulls him out of line to search his luggage (happened twice on one trip).

20. I did not say that he didn't
only that it is illogical to say that a PRIVATE jet is required to get to Europe
Thanks for post #10 though :applause:

14. He's the former vice president of the United States.
I doubt that the Secret Service or Gore's staff would much appreciate him flying coach.

VPs only get SS protection for six months after leaving office. Interesting.

show him flying commercial.

2. Gore purchases carbon credits to offset his "carbon footprint."
That point is likely above their collective talking heads though?

4. It's always expressed by people who don't bother to recycle, don't use alternative energy, etc, etc.
It's as if they're saying that it's okay that Bush is an environmental death machine because Gore does X and Y but not Z.
It's an irrational argument.

5. This isn't about Al Gore.
It is about the whole world. If AG has to fly a private jet to attend events to get his point across, so what? It's not like the major airlines are going to stop when he does.

12. His carbon footprint is much, much smaller than it would be "normally"
If he traveled everywhere by limo and private jet, bought power created by burning coal instead of green power, drove an SUV instead of a hybrid, didn't install solar panels on his home, continued to use incandescent light bulbs, etc., etc., etc.

F.Y.I. He does a lot of video conferencing and telecommuting as well.

10. Yes, his office has a number of times
Here's a few examples from ThinkProgress:

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/02/26/gore-responds-to-drudge/

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/02/16/hannity-gore/

"This afternoon, ThinkProgress reached Vice President Gore’s office for response to Hannity’s attacks. Here’s what his office told us:

– Gore lives a strict carbon-neutral lifestyle both in his work and private life. That means he tries to reduce his emissions as much as possible, and then purchases carbon offsets for the remaining emissions.

– In his private life, Gore tries to reduce his emissions as much as possible. He drives a hybrid, flies commercially whenever he can, and purchases green power. In the few instances where work has demanded that he travel privately, he purchases carbon offsets for the emissions."

believe it or not if you have a group of people all going to the same place, especially off the beaten path it can be quite economical.

It costs us like $6500 to fly up to a dozen of us to the middle of nowhere in three and a half hours out of an airport 10 minutes from our office that would otherwise be about a day of travel with two connections and usually a $700 to $1100 airfare per head with the final leg in a 19 seater that usually has to break up our party over two flights.

Plus we get the added bonus of not having to deal with the TSA fucktards and stormtrooper stewardesses.
