Poll question: Vote on the Next DU Aggrieved Group Seminar!

One of the greatest things about DU is that it expands our understanding of each other. Specifically, we learn, each week or so, of some terrible oppression suffered by some sub-group of society that one would, on the surface, expect to be relatively privileged. Between the awful discrimination against Southerners, the despicable Christian bashing, the disrespect suffered by smokers, hunters, meat eaters, yes, and even the sorry torments of social disrepute endured by Boston Red Sox fans, I've learned so much - about them and about myself! I've learned to reflect on my own snap judgments, and the way society at large shapes my responses to individuals in these groups, the way I have tended to overgeneralize, or stereotype. True, most of us were taught in first grade and every 45 second thereafter that stereotyping is bad, yet we continue on with it, and so the lessons must be repeated. DU has taught me that these groups remain at a distinct structural disadvantage, and so I've learned to temper my responses, and reflect before acting or speaking.

The only problem is that I can never predict when the next educational week-long seminar on social oppression will flare up, so I'm left guessing, and probably behaving in unseemly ways toward some group I mistakenly believe to hold a structural social advantage over others. So, I propose that we designate an aggrieved group for the coming week (and, hopefully, every week thereafter), so that our education - heretofore random or linked to the ticking time bomb of oppression - can be systematically engaged. We will all be better people for it.

Marine Engineers. We were aggrieved last week. I forgot the details, but we were aggrieved and right here on DU!

Approximately 0.003.5 percent of DU Members are Marine Engineers. I think that qualifies us as an oppressed minority.

We (SWMC group) held a meeting just the other night, and we lit our cigars (made by child laborers in Ecuador) with $100 bills.

As we discussed our agenda we ate veal (we were on our yacht). Our ability to socially network and control all things was brought into question by a SWMC member who had no job and was dirt poor. When we learned of his plight we named him CEO of a new company we planned to start. But then it was revealed to us by another member that he had a bad back and was disabled, which made him no longer a member of the club (once you can fit into any other group you are no longer considered an oppressor, you are now oppressed).

Word got out quickly that if you got tired of feeling guilty about your oppressor status all you had to do was join up with a group that does not get that label (one member became a pagan, another claimed he was left handed). People started leaving in droves and we kept hearing more and more reports on how evil we were (are).

After much thought, I decided to leave as well. I am now poor, so I can bitch about how those who are not are oppressing me and I am victim instead of a perp.

The guilt is gone mostly (except people still look at me and I can't hide that I am a white male), I still get looks of scorn and of fear from others though. I don't go to church, so I can hide my religion.

I still shudder when I fill out job apps and they ask about my race/gender - I feel so...trashy.

I always thought being who I was was based on my actions on earth. I was wrong.

I apologize to all humans for being born this way, all the actions committed by people like me...well I am to blame.

We have suffered for YEARS over the designs engineered for right-handed people. Sure, little boutique shops and cute gadgets have turned up with precious sayings on them which try to make us feel equal, but we are still oppressed!

our local nightly news just did a piece on the water shortage, with pics of the resevoirs, well the dry banks and puddles of it, and the restrictions that were upcoming. Interspersed in the story was a clip of the owner of a long-standing, popular steak house's owner describing how thay would serve from plasic, recyclable plates, use plastic forks, etc if need be to comply.
