CMPA Study: Fox News Most Balanced Network
Study: Fox News Most Balanced Network

Huffington Post
RE: Center for Media and Public Affairs
December 28, 2007 08:11 AM

TV election news has been hardest on Hillary Clinton this fall, while Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee have been the biggest media favorites, according to a new study by the Center for Media and Public Affairs (CMPA) at George Mason University. The study also found that Fox NewsChannel's evening news show provided more balanced coverage than its counterparts on the broadcast networks.

Who's Fair and Balanced?: Fox News Channel's coverage was more balanced toward both parties than the broadcast networks were. On FOX, evaluations of all Democratic candidates combined were split almost evenly - 51% positive vs. 49% negative, as were all evaluations of GOP candidates - 49% positive vs. 51% negative, producing a perfectly balanced 50-50 split for all candidates of both parties.

On the three broadcast networks, opinion on Democratic candidates split 47% positive vs. 53% negative, while evaluations of Republicans were more negative - 40% positive vs. 60% negative. For both parties combined, network evaluations were almost 3 to 2 negative in tone, i.e. 41% positive vs. 59% negative.

- It should be pointed out that while the Center for Media and Public Affairs claims to be "non-partisan," a review of their primary sources of funding indicates that the overwhelming proportion of their funding comes from conservative foundations. From Media Transparency, they list the following donors:

Carthage Foundation, part of the Scaife Foundations; Earhart Foundation; ohn M. Olin Foundation; Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation; Sarah Scaife Foundation, part of the Scaife Foundations; and the Smith Richardson Foundation

It goes on further to say:

In 1985, Lichter and his wife Linda, with the financial support of such conservative foundations as Scaife and Olin, formed the Center for Media and Public Affairs, a research institute that, while presenting itself as nonpartisan, sought to document instances of liberal bias on the networks and in newspapers. Its reports helped compliment the Reagan administration's efforts to portray the press as out of step with "mainstream America." The impact of these efforts was apparent in journalists' often uncritical coverage of such issues as supply-side economics and the abusive activities of the Salvadoran military, the Nicaraguan contras, and other forces allied with the US in Central America...

So much for being impartial.

16. GMU is heavily funded by conservative think tanks.

For years it's had a reputation for turning out good little GOPers. The law school is especially right-wing.

4. Fox News doesn't want to have to talk about the Republicans
they want to get one and start with the national campaign

AND

the MSM corporate media have finally been turned into the bashing machinery that their owners and the RW media have been working towards all these years.

5. Half of the stories on Mussolini and Hitler...
were either positive or negative? The stories that should be negative were positive and the stories that should have been positive were negative. Fair and balanced, yep.

10. That's right
It's fair and balanced means how they report the news based on one organizations opinion of "what is a positive story" and "what is a negative story". Yes Fox manages to find positive Republican news in a year of major Republican scandles, and the most obstructionist minority congressional party in history. And that's seen as a good thing. I think most DU believe fair and balanced mean you report the news period. If the news is bad news for one party it's job isn't to find pointless fluff pieces to "balance" it out.

Here we are claiming the Fox news is biased when, in fact, it's the most impartial.

23. *THAT*, of course, is the real lie of this report.
Imagine: "We conclude that the reporting is best because
49% of the stories covering Hitler were positive and 51%
were negative."

(Substitute Pol Pot or Mahatma Gandhi is you wish.)

24. Of course they are..here's how they do it..
Hillary Clinton (newsreader rolls eyes and chuckles) seems to be weathering the SCANDALS of the 90's and is "apparently" ahead in the DemocRAT primary...

Rudy Giuliani, hero of 9-11, cleaner-upper of the FILTH that was NewYorkCity, is being pressed hard about matters that are purely personal, and are no ones' business, but he's being very brave and forthcoming.

etc
