Am I in the wrong forum?
I can't believe the tons and tons of posts here that really belong in the GD:Politics forum. Am I wrong? I don't come to GD to see "why I support so-and-so" and "So-and-so's evil" and "whoo! My candidate's better" kind of posts. I go to GD:Politics for that. Is it just spilling over? Why have a separate politics forum if it's not going to stay there?

26. I've yet to see exactly what distinguishes GD from other forums.
I just had a very general thread moved to the Lounge, which is probably where it belongs. So ... what is GD for?

This much politicking, though, is getting annoying.

12. This much? It's getting crazy in here!
Candidate-bashing posts should only be in Politics. News that isn't current can be in here, but the "I know whom to vote for now" posts should be in Politics. So should the "my candidate kicks your candidate's ass" posts.

16. Generally, stuff from political operatives gets into GD: Politics.
Anything that's practically a press release or is annoying rant against one or more candidates in favor of another goes into GD:P. Not anymore, I guess.

they'd move them.

I think that with the Primaries being in the mainstream, general news right now, then having the discussions in GD is okay.

Well, if I can't talk about Fig Newtons in this forum, can I say that I like any politician who supports raspberry-colored thread.

I have a raspberry-colored sweater.

I wear it when I eat raspberries.

That way, I don't have to use a napkin.

Plus, it saves money. I seldom have to have it drycleaned.

34. Maybe use the hide thread feature to self-correct the problem?
That's how I control the over abundance of irrelevant bashing. It works out pretty well for me.

I imagine, but have no real reason for doing so, that if things get too ugly and/or out of hand in GD then the powers that be will restrict placement of candidate topics to GDP.

As it is right now GD is just kind of catching the overflow on most days with bursts in activity after candidate related events.

You'll know it's off because all the threads you hid will magically reappear and this --> little image will no longer be visible.

I'm not sure if we lose it at level 1 or if it's level 2, but I know we lost it during the Iowa caucus the other night.

33. As I understand it ...
GD was for "instant karma" type posts, short quips and rants and other general discussions of many different types of topics while GD-P was for more lengthy, almost article like posts that delve much deeper into a singular topic and remain more on topic than GD ever could.

At least that is what I recall from the original posts that introduced the two forums by the admins.

So, almost anything goes in GD ... even (gasp) political posts.

38. They're EVERYWHERE! They're EVERYWHERE! AAAAAAIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
Yeah, the spillover is getting kinda heavy. I avoid GD-P specifically so I don't have to deal with the barrage of candidate posts, but I'm definitely guilty of getting sucked into some of it here in GD.

GD-P was originally created back during the 2004 campaign season to be THE forum for politicking, and to leave GD open for other kinds of discussion. But the 2008 campaign has been basically going on since 2006 and there's been a continuous blurring of what gets posted where.

I do hope that at some point the admins will decide to tighten up the parameters of what goes where. Meanwhile, I've gotten very good at ducking...

(I wish there were a :monkeys flinging poo: emoticon)

44. It should die down a bit after the NH primary -- at least until the next debate.
:P

Ultimately, it's up to the admins to crack down or not. Self-policing only works up to a point, as you can see.

This is my second primary season on DU, I'm much more enured to the horror of it all than I was in 2004. Hang in there, it will get much worse before it gets better. ;)

Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 08:56 PM by NNN0LHI
I am not familiar with it. I have pretty much only hung around here. Are there things I shouldn't post here?

I have always posted everything (except lounge stuff) here. Seemed to work out for me. This changing what and where we are supposed to post stuff is tough on us old guys. Hard to get used to new rules and regulations. We tend to get set in our ways.
