Gophers burrowing in the earthen damns in Nevada caused damn
breach!

They didn't expect floods in Nevada and no one had flood insurance!

Is Nevada a red state? The reason I ask is they are getting ready to get a rude awakening on how this current government treats victims of "Natural Disasters"!

3. They probably can't get flood ins.
That same levee breached in 1996 and flooded 200 homes, since then more homes have been built! Now 900 homes are damaged. Why does the local government still issue building permits in this area?

6. Old Nevada boy to the defense --the canal, not the dam, was breached.

From the history book:
The Truckee Canal was constructed at the same time as the diversion dam. Excavation and construction of the 32-mile long canal required more that 1,000 men and two years to complete. Started in September 1903, excavations were carried out using three large drag-line excavators. In addition to more than 30 miles of canal, three tunnels were constructed on the canal route. The tunnels range in length from 309 feet to 1,521 feet and are 15.3 feet in diameter. Work on Division 3 was completed September 30, 1904, followed by Division 2 on February 2, 1905, and Division 1 on May 20, 1905. The Truckee Canal is 31.2 miles long and has an initial bottom width of 20 feet with a capacity of 1,500 cfs and a maximum depth of 13 feet. At several points along its route, the canal has control gates to release water for irrigation of lands adjacent to the canal. The canal then terminated at the Carson River where the flow discharged into the river via a timber chute that was later replaced by a concrete chute.(15)

12. On flood insurance in NV
Flood Insurance
Flood insurance is excluded under standard homeowners and renters policies. Flood insurance is available for purchase, however as a separate policy. If you are moving into a new home, apartment or business location, make sure you have adequate insurance coverage. Contact your insurance agent for information on the flood risk to your property. Homeowners need to be aware that there is a 30 day waiting period required for flood insurance to take effect. Should your home fall victim to a flood, remember to inspect it for damage, especially for cracks in foundations. Take pictures of damaged property and keep notes. Also make an inventory of your possessions and store it off the premises. Use pictures and inventory lists to help your insurance company determine the extent of the damages and to facilitate the insurance claim process. Although flood insurance is available through insurance companies, policies are underwritten and issued by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP as part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Contacts for flood safety and insurance information include:

National Flood Insurance Program (888)CALL-FLOOD
National Flood Insurance Program Agent Referral (800) 427-4661
National Flood insurance Program Web site: http://www.fema.gov

I live about 30 miles away from where this occurred. Anyone who thinks it never floods here is a fool. It does. Especially flash floods, because it's so dry year round and sudden down pours aren't absorbed quickly, and in low lying areas near the Truckee.

If you live in certain areas in NV, and can afford flood insurance, you should get it.

I'm not sure why no one had flood insurance out there -- I'll have to look into this more carefully to understand.

I was quite frustrated with the town meeting that the Emergency Management people had that aired for a looooong time today -- they seemed to not be attending to the situation -- waiting for FEMA to come over the mountain pass from Sacramento and we had horrible snow and rain the last three days so they were delayed (duh, ever hear of a four wheel drive and snow tires?) -- and giving lip service.

Anyway, thanks for the post. This has hurt a lot of folks out there.
