Iraqi Children Pay Heavy Price of War
Iraqi Children Pay Heavy Price of War

By Dr. Cesar Chelala

13/01/08 --- NEW YORK—The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has painted a dramatic picture of the situation of children in Iraq and warned that increased assistance is needed to improve their dire situation.

According to UNICEF, an estimated two million children suffer from poor nutrition, disease, and interrupted education. One child dies every five minutes because of the war, and many more are left with severe injuries.

Of the estimated four million Iraqis who have been internally displaced or who have left the country, one and a half million are children. For the most part, those remaining don't have access to basic health care, education, shelter, potable water, and sanitation.

Sick or injured children, who could otherwise be treated by simple means, are left to die in the hundreds because they don't have access to basic medicines or other resources.

Children who have lost hands, feet, or other limbs are left without prostheses. Children with grave psychological distress are left untreated. This is the assessment of 100 British and Iraqi physicians.

1. Genocide.
What is happening in Iraq is genocide, and there is no such thing as an accidental genocide.

2. there is also no such thing
as incidental genocide. Ergo Iraq not genocide.

It is mass murder in order to exploit and steal.
It is an illegal pre-emptive war.
It is an occupation.
It is, most simply put, war for Empire.

If the aim was to wipe out a cultural/religious or ethnic group from a certain area (or even attempt to wipe out) then it would be genocide.

The aim however had nothing to do with ethnicity. If Iraq was populated by white southern baptists nothing would be any different (except possibly the rhetoric used to gee up the rednecks).

14. White supremacy is what underlies the GENOCIDE in Iraq.
Love your "plausible deniability," though. ;-)

3. I'd like to say "not in my name" but sadly, yes, it is our failure to stop these
insane mass murderers that the rest of the world will consider if we ever again have the freedom to travel. When they look at us, they will see these crimes.

and the overthrow of Mossadegh, the arming of the mujahideen, the support of the Contras, the murder of Allende, the poisoning of two thirds of Vietnam, the many and varied crimes of School of the Americas/WHINSEC graduates, the murder of Lumumba, supporting Saddam's brutalisation of the Kurdish and Shiite populations, supporting the illegal occupation of Palestine, Operation Phoenix, the al-Amiriya shelter bombing, the murder of 290 civilians on Iran Air Flight 655, the My Lai massacre, illegal bombing of Cambodia, the attack on Panama, supporting Suharto's coup and the following murder of hundreds of thousands of people etc etc etc

Had Bush never been elected the majority of the world would view the US much the same. The US has been exploiting other nations for power and profit since (at the least) the enunciation of the Monroe doctrine.

ALL Empires are viewed the same by those not inside them.

US crimes against humanity are anything but new.

"Death rates among children under five are now nearing those in sub-Saharan Africa, despite Iraq being a relatively wealthy, well-resourced and educated country. Eight million Iraqis are in need of emergency aid, the report said."

What possible chance do these children have?
