Why is Air Force One in the Reagan library?
If that plane was used by Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 1 and Clinton why isn't the plane in the Smithsonian instead of the Reagan library?

7. Exactly. Actually, "Air Force One" is a call-sign, not an airplane.
If the President is on an Air Force GulfStream-V, it is "Air Force One." If the President is on an Army Gulfstream-V, it is "Army One."

8. Mac, I don't think the Army HAS any Gulfstream-Vs
According to the Memorandum of Understanding that came out when the Air Force split away from the Army, the Army can only have propeller-driven planes.

Now that the MI Corps has retired the Mohawks, the Army has these fixed-wing planes in its inventory:

C-12: This is a Beechcraft King Air B-200 with a US Army tail number. The ones they have predate the EFIS-equipped B200s.
U-21: This is a Beechcraft King Air C-90. It's basically obsolete. The National Guard and Reserve components probably have these in their inventories, but any self-respecting general has a C-12.

Both the King Airs are used for executive transport.

U-28A: This is a Pilatus PC-12; these are used to insert Special Operations Forces. They needed a fixed-wing aircraft, and the PC-12 is really good for things like this.

I remember seeing a report that they were THINKING about buying a Learjet for the Chief of Staff of the Army, but your run-of-the-mill general has a King Air.

11. Believe me, the ARMY has GulfStream jets.
Maybe G-IV-SPs, but I think G-V's also. The MOU you refer to took the Caribou away from the Army. That was in 1968. Viet Nam.

I flew the Lockheed SP-2E Neptune, seven of which were in the Army inventory in 1970. That probably does not show on your normal TO&E list.

4. The only building big enough for it.

They needed a building that was designed to hold the ego of the Republican Party, and that would be the Reagan Shrine, I mean Library.

6. Regan used air force one a lot.
I don't think any president traveled as much as he did. Most of my memories of him involve him climbing down from the plane and giving a speech about where he had just been and what he had done.
