1 in 7 children in Iraq have at least one disability
per CNN, from UNICEF. And an insufficient social and medical support system.

But at least Sadaam is out. :eyes:

1. Don't worry
Soon enough, they'll all be dead, and we won't be talking about how they are disabled and starving anymore.

3. How do you think this compares to US?
Edited on Sat Mar-01-08 05:17 PM by Traveling_Home
1 in 7 is about 14%.

How does this compare to the US?

How does this compare to Venezuela?

How does this compare to China?

Without some statement comparing this information to other countries' information, your post has no meaining.

4. 5.8 percent for U.S. children under 18
And I'm pretty sure most of those are not the result of bombs. :eyes:

6. About 7% in US
About 7% of US children is what my stats from dept of ed so we're in the same ball park - about half the rate of Iraq. Now to add meaningfulness we need to look at Iraq in comparison to other nations of similar per capita socio-economic factors.

How does Iraq compare to Venezuela?

How does Iraq compare to China?

How does Iraq compare to Iran?

Wait - Iran doesn't have any disabled!! LOL

Anyway numbers in disability data - like in most other arenas - need to have a basis of comparison to give meaning.

If you find numbers for comparative societies for iraq but without war I would be interested.

5. comparison to rest of world
Around 10 per cent of the world’s population, or 650 million people, live with a disability.

Eighty per cent of persons with disabilities live in developing countries, according to the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

http://www.unicef.org/explore_3893.html

Those are adults, mind you, so the average for just children would be significantly lower than for the full population.

7. Thanks and

here's for England as a comparison

60,000,000 people in 2008

"There are over 10 million disabled people in Britain; of which, 4.6 million are over State Pension Age and 700,000 are children. (Family Resources Survey 2003-2004)."

http://drc.uat.rroom.net/newsroom/key_drc_facts_and_glossary/number_of_disabled_people_in.aspx

Thus in England for all ages 10 mil out of 60 mil or about 16% disabled in English population.

For Children there are 7,000,000 and 700,000 with disability or about 10%.

But you can't really compare England (or US) to Iraq. Lack of nutrition, education, medical care, etc, etc make the comparison meaningless.

It would be really good to have some stats from Iran, Jordan, Yemen or others with similar socio-economic status as Iraq.

Thanks
