Spitzer had utilized the services of a prostitute. Not wonderful considering he prosecuted prostitution rings in his past, and it is illegal.

Or McCain, who during his first marriage had admitted to having several affairs. He then leaves his first wife, who had been crippled in a car accident, for a very strongly politically connected woman. If he married his second wife for the sole purpose of starting a political career, wouldn't that be a form of prostitution on McCain's part?

Just saying......

10. The guy fessed up? To what?
To what?

We have very VERY few details on what is going on here.

I am rather astonished at so many jumping to conclusions.

:wow:

Moreover, boy O has the story changed! Initially, this was ALL ABOUT the investigation of an escort service. Now, the feds secured bank information on Spitzer and all sorts of allegations are being thrown about. Aren't you the least bit curious WHO is leaking all this information and WHY the story is so murky and lacking in detail?

I mean, why was ONLY #9 identified? Did the feds misrepresent facts to obtain a warrant to obtain Spit's bank records? How did an investigation into an escort service evolve into an outright assault on a Democratic representative who just happens to be the most assertive watchdog over Wall Street and corporate abuse?

There are A LOT of blank spots in this story.

:wtf:

I mean, do we ALL not know damn well political targeting is extraordinarily active with this administration? Aren't we quite familiar with how the RW engages in intentional messaging usually with the objective of distracting from something far more egregious?

4. It's not the moral outrage. It's the poor judgment as a public official.
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 07:24 AM by robcon
Spitzer set himself up to be blackmailed as the governor of NY.

What he or McCain did in their private lives does not matter. As a public official you can't get involved with organized crime groups, or participating in an activity that may lead to blackmail.

There is no one who supported Spitzer more than me. I was proud to have voted for him. But the NY Times was right...

"New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer could not have been more wrong in his brief public appearance after the world learned that he was suspected of patronizing a prostitution ring. He did not just betray his family in a private matter. He betrayed the public, and it is hard to see how he will recover from this mess and go on to lead the reformist agenda on which he was elected to office...

... His short, arrogant statement simply was not enough, not from the Sheriff of Wall Street, not from the self-appointed Mr. Clean who went to Albany promising a new and better day."

6. I would think that the definition of politician these days MUST include the word "HYPOCRITE".
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 07:41 AM by BrklynLiberal
Some are just bigger hypocrites than others. And some are just plain stupid!!! As Jay Leno said to Hugh Grant after Grant was caught with that prostitute..."What the Hell were you thinking??"
I would agree that Spitzer may have been felled by HUBRIS more than anything else. He has made alot of enemies during his brief tenure as governor of NY.

8. It is only the classification that matters.
Once they define themselves as hypocrites through their actions, the severity of the hypocrisy is only an indication of how much internal work the individual needs to do.

ACLU Slams Gov. Eliot Spitzer for Plan to Sacrifice New Yorkers' Privacy for Failed, Costly Real ID Program (10/27/2007)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: (202) 675-2312, media@dcaclu.org

WASHINGTON - The ACLU today condemned an announcement by New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer that he would implement the Real ID Act, which would turn state driver's licenses into a national ID card. Spitzer made the announcement with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Michael Chertoff.

"Eliot Spitzer is acting in isolation," said Senior Legislative Counsel Timothy Sparapani. "No other governor, Republican or Democratic, has been willing to impose such a huge tax increase on citizens and sell out their privacy for this failed program. Instead, states have been rejecting Real ID in droves. Spitzer is not only shilling for the Bush Administration, he's blindly endorsing a program for which no final regulations even exist."

Although DHS is the agency tasked to create guidelines for states to implement Real ID, it has failed to issue final regulations for implementation more than two years after the law was passed. That failure, along with its $23 billion price tag, and the dangers it poses to Americans' privacy and identity security, have led seven states to pass laws against implementing Real ID, and an additional 10 to pass resolutions calling on Congress to repeal the Act.

The Real ID Act was passed in 2005, attached to an emergency supplemental appropriations bill. It received no hearings or full debate in the Congress. Since its passage, states have balked at the massive cost and have complained that the law would expose citizens to invasions of privacy and identity theft. The state rebellion against Real ID has led to the introduction of bipartisan legislation in the U.S. Congress to repeal the Act. This past summer, the U.S. Senate twice voted against expanding and providing funding for Real ID.

"Spitzer is snatching defeat from the jaws of victory," said Technology and Liberty Program Director Barry Steinhardt. "According to the Department of Homeland Security's own numbers, Real ID will force Americans to pay nearly $100 to get a driver's license. The fact that Spitzer is willing to plunge his state into fiscal irresponsibility, while exposing his constituents to massive identity theft, is unfathomable. Other governors across the country are standing up to the Department of Homeland Security's fear-mongering. Real ID is a failed program on life support; Spitzer's attempt to resuscitate it is a major mistake, and a slap in the face of New Yorkers."

18. Spitzer
Sorry, it's true. They are both turds, but Spitzer was the senior law officer of the state AND he had been a moral crusader against prostitution.

He's scum in my book. I don't care what party he is from.

I'm willing to use what's available for political purposes, but I'm not invested in who is sleeping with who - outside my own marriage.
