Gorda, California

Washington DC, one mile from the White House

Seattle, Washington

======

P.S. for nostalgia's sake:

The year 2000, when candidate George W. Bush chided Clinton for the high price of gasoline, suggesting that he should "jawbone" OPEC to "open their spigots." :eyes: Loser.

7. It would be funny, if it weren't killing our economy.
Where are the capitalists? Where are the right-wing militias? Why isn't the screaming and yelling happening? They'll get robbed by a white texan and not even care?

3. Oil prices were bound to rise. There was an oil glut in the late 1990s that OPEC wanted to correct.
I remember a local gas station when I was in roughly 9th grade got down to something like 96 cents per gallon in 1999.

4. For the first time in my life I pumped ONE gallon into my tank today
One gallon.

Granted, it was because they were out of 91 and I had to pump 89 (and yes, my car needs the higher octane) but still. Damn.

13. There was a guy at the station the other day who put in, I kid you not,
$.17 worth, hoping it would get him the few blocks home; it was all the cash he had until payday.
I heard the tellers talking about it as I was waiting to pay inside...
yikes.

10. I actually had to take a vacation day b/c I couldn't afford to drive
I don't get paid until Friday and I don't have the money to drive 25 miles roundtrip for 4 days so I took yesterday off. First time I've ever taken a vacation day because of POVERTY related to gas prices.

14. That's what it came down to with me -- I had $20
and I decided to stay home for one more day so I could buy some pasta
and sauce to last me through Friday. Tomorrow I'll probably put the
other $10 into the tank and hope that gets me through Thursday's commute.

Every time I think I can't sink any lower ... I manage to do just that.
But at least I'm not going hungry!

15. If this keeps up we will have to move everything closer together
or reduce the mile to 3,000 feet... ya know, to offset the madness of it all. I'm shocked to see this when various industries have reported RECORD profits.

16. Say goodbye

to urban sprawl, commuter belts, and bedroom communities.

Say hello to the revival of towns and cities as people are forced to move closer to jobs and services. I would expect to see houses in towns and cities revive in value faster than those further out, as people start to figure out that a 20,30,40 mile commute to work is no longer tenable.

The advent of the car created the conditions for the rise of suburbs. As the car becomes less and less cost-effective, the suburbs will die a slow death.

can fit into the city anymore. I expect to see more trains and buses.
