Arkansas Woman, Left in Cell, Goes 4 Days With No Food or Water

A woman was locked for four days in a tiny holding cell in a northern Arkansas courthouse, forgotten by the authorities and left without food or water, the local Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday.

The woman, Adriana Torres-Flores, 38, a longtime illegal immigrant from Mexico, slept on the floor with only a shoe for a pillow, and with nothing to drink except her own urine, The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. There was no bathroom in the cell.

A bailiff had apparently forgotten that he placed Ms. Torres-Flores, a mother of three, in the cell last Thursday, and simply left her in the empty courthouse, in Fayetteville, over the weekend, said the chief deputy of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Jay Cantrell. A snowstorm meant that there were far fewer people than usual working at the courthouse on Friday.

“He just flat forgot about her,” Mr. Cantrell said, adding that the bailiff, Jarrod Hankins, had been placed on administrative leave, having been on the job a few months. “It was just a horrible mistake,” Mr. Cantrell said.

She was taken to a hospital and treated, and is now recovering at home, Mr. Lewis said, “very worn out from the whole ordeal.”

1. Why only Mexican women?
Doesn't that advice apply across the board?

3. no and yes

the race issue

and the misogynist issue

intertwined - who would be forgotten the quickest?

anyway it still stands, Mexican women should avoid Fayetteville, Arkansas unless they are prepared.

2. Hate to tell you, but there are thousands of Mexican women doing just fine in Fayetteville, AR.
Fayetteville, home of the University of Arkansas, is one of the most liberal and progressive places in the South. This was a terrible thing to have occurred, but I don't believe for a second it was done on purpose.

4. really?

aren't there procedures for booking, holding, etc. prisoners? protocols? can a woman be forgotten for days when there are protocols?

never mind having the woman surface in the mind of the door locker.

9. Yes, but that 'holding' cell had no video camera and is supposed to be used for no more than 2 hours
at a time. The sheriff has already requested a video camera be installed and put in place a visual check of all courthouse holding areas (this was in the courthouse, not the jail) at closing time. The baliff has been suspended without pay until the investigation has been completed. Like I said, it was a terrible thing to have happen, but I do not believe it was intentional. She was not arrested for being here illegally, she was arrested for selling fake DVD's at a flea market, along with about 4 others.

The Mexican consulate was here on Tuesday and discussed her status with the sheriff and mayor.

5. we have several GOP candidates for state house and senate here vowing
not one dime of state funds to be spent on "illegals" and no state money for sanctuary cities. So Plano and Dallas would get no money from the state for roads in the city, no state police doing anything within the city limits, TXDot would have to close all the cameras and road monitoring, on and on.

7. Besides the terrible lapse in processing a prisoner, is there anything that indicates her ethinicity

...gender, or residence status had anything to do with her treatment?

If not, then you're just ethnic, race, and gender baiting.
