Could you/would you ever invest in "merchants of death"?

Well, if you did indeed switch* from tampons (Procter & Gamble) to bullets (Alliance TechSystems), you’d be ahead at this point.

You’d also be well ahead of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

*This refers to a previous post about investing in consumables versus weapon systems and munitions.

Just for the fun and horror of it, pretend you own a modest stake in some of these companies and track them on the stock market for a few weeks. After awhile, long, pointless, and unwinnable wars won't seem like such a bad thing. Even Iran starts to look very tempting at a 34% ROI.

1. No, and I was surprised to find out my dad didn't, either
Nor did he invest in alcohol or tobacco.

I am not greedy enough to want to prosper by the misery of others.

2. Well, Proctor & Gamble is still a major murderer of animals
Both companies are EVIL as far as I'm concerned.

3. I'm opposed to capitalism in general.
So I refuse to invest, period.

4. I can't afford to invest in shit,
but even if I could I wouldn't invest in murderous assholes no matter what the profit margin.

5. I'll take my lead from
the Jr. Senator from Massachusetts, if it's OK for him it's OK for me.

6. 34% ROI would be sweet if inflation wasn't also 34%, wages hadn't declined by 34%...
And we were all invested. But we're not. We can't afford food, shelter and transportation - not all at the same time, anyway.

Anyone who shops for food knows the truth, and the takedown isn't going to be pretty. It's one thing to deal with pissed-off Republics or justifiably angry Dems, but starving, poor people who KNOW you don't care? Bwahahahahahahahaha.

You've taken it beyond the political arena asswipes, and now.....

7. No. Decided that about 35 years ago, when my first hubby wanted to learn how to invest....
Not that we had much money, but the whole idea was to make some more, right? One of the things we talked about at length was buying gold coins, and the choices were Krugerands (South Africa, then under apartheid) or Canadian gold. I refused to have anything to do with supporting South Africa. And so it went -- wouldn't say yes to tobacco, either.

For those who are interested, there are investment organizations that cater to those with religious and ethical principles. I have seen them advertise in American Buddhist magazines, a Lutheran magazine, and a Unitarian Universalist magazine. If I were going to invest (and I am not), I would look up one of those outfits.

8. NO
I'm rather surprised such a question could seriously be asked here. Then again, obviously a lot of people ARE investing in such things, so maybe it's not so outlandish as it seems to me.

Having said that, it often takes great effort to know what you have invested in, in the case of 401k's and other bundled funds. Even then, you can't always know what the companies you are invested in are up to, and how many are there really who have completely clean hands?
