Dade GOP incumbents pull out of debates
BY LESLEY CLARK lclark@MiamiHerald.com

Miami's three Cuban-American Republicans in Congress have scrapped plans to participate in a series of debates with their Democratic challengers.

The South Florida AFL-CIO, which in recent years has hosted debates for mayoral and gubernatorial races, planned three debates next week for the nationally watched contests. But the Republicans said this week that they're not going, throwing the bipartisan nature of the event into doubt.

The union -- which endorsed the three incumbents in 2006 -- says the events will go on next week as scheduled. All three Democrats, who represent the first significant challenge to the incumbents, said they plan to attend and suggested the Republicans were reluctant to spar face to face.

''We just want to give our working families a chance to talk to the candidates,'' said union president Fred Frost, who met late Wednesday with representatives from two of the Republican campaigns in a bid to revive the events. ``I think they'd be squandering what I'd consider a great opportunity.''

Very interesting. Please remember Raul Martinez, Joe Garcia and Annette Taddeo when you contribute. We have a chance to pick up some of these neo-con seats in S. Florida.

1. Er ... that's Joe Garcia, not Joe Gomez.

4. Usually, I'm not a spelling nazi type of person, but...
people gots to know the name if they're gonna support the candidates :)

Incidentally, both Garcia and Taddeo seem like great candidates -- they're about as progressive as one can hope for in districts that lean slightly Republican. I haven't talked to Martinez, so I can't speak about him on a personal level, but he's a very well-known pol in the district in which he's running. Much better name recognition than either Taddeo or Garcia, for that matter.

These three districts are actually the last Republican-held ones in South Florida. If Dems can win all three, then South Florida is a sea of blue in the 111th Congress.

5. I have been trying to support Martinez. He looks like a great
candidate.

I have set aside a monthly amount (small, I admit) to support candidates for congress. Just added Garcia and Taddeo.

I am still angry that DWSchultz cannot support them.

6. Wasserman-Schultz's participation (or lack thereof) on the Red to Blue Committee...
was troubling to me too. I take heart in the fact that, as far as her votes in Congress are concerned, she's been doing an amazing, amazing job. I truly couldn't ask for better. So, while her lack of vocal enthusiasm for these Democratic contenders does annoy me a great deal, I'm willing to let it slide .... of course, if all three of them lose, I'm going to be royally pissed off! ;)

9. I would have also, except when she topedoed Rangel, and then
pinned on a "Screw Dean" button. I lost all the respect I had for her. She seems quite able to stand up to Democrats, but not Republicans. And those three are 100% Neo-Cons.

7. Wasserman-Schultz and the other DINO Florida congressshits are hiding them
in their basement. Turncoats like the "Dems" in Florida need to be purged from our party.

8. My hispanic SO is boggled at the reps from So.FL.
Can't even conceive how they get elected down there - wonders if there's something wrong with the air, water and food around Miami.
