Kirk Douglas and his wife have dedicated their 400th school playground
Kirk Douglas, wife, dedicate LA school playground
Wed May 28, 9:22 PM ET

LOS ANGELES - Kirk Douglas and his wife have dedicated their 400th school playground — completing a decade-long effort to give Los Angeles kids a place to frolic.

The 91-year-old actor took a ride down a slide during the unveiling Wednesday at a Los Angeles elementary school.

Douglas and his wife, Anne, created a foundation that has provided more than $8 million to build or refurbish play areas in the Los Angeles school district.

The 91-year-old Douglas and his wife Anne have donated a renovation a week over an 11-year period beginning in 1997. The couple provides a grant of $25,000 per playground, with the school's parents or supporters matching the amount in money or services.

3. Picture the scene. After the dedication ceremony, Mr. Douglas goes socialize with the kids and...
KD: Hello, boy! What's your name?
Kid: I am Spartacus!
Another kid: No, I am Spartacus!
Another kid: No, I am Spartacus!

OK, I'll go away now.

4. He always sort of annoyed me as an actor
His characters were always so ridiculously larger than life--oh, I know that was the fault of screenwriter and director, but still, they were comic book characters. And that chin! Jeez, you could hide a pickle in that thing!

Then I started to find out about who he really is.

He and his wife are true American treasures. Fortunate in life and well rewarded, they've spent their time paying back in many different ways. As heroic as his film characters were always meant to be, they never came close to the heroism of his everyday life.

May he have many more slides to play on.

12. I did myself that favor last week
when TCM played it.

IMO, it's the most amazing antiwar movie ever made.

one of the best films ever directed, and mostly overlooked when lists are made.

11. Perhaps playing Colonel Casey in "Seven Days in May" represents more the kind of hero he is!...

5. Kirk is a good man
And Anne is a good woman. They also funded a lovely theater in Culver City that bears his name. Renovated and rescued an old and grand house for future generations, in the old Studio neighborhood. And Kirk has always been cool. 90 and cool. May we all get there!
