reminds me of this story from the 1960s. stop me if you've heard it before:

so the pope, jfk, and mayor daley were stranded in a lifeboat in mid-atlantic. his holiness the pope complained,
"so fellas, we're up against it. three of us in a one-person lifeboat, which is leaking and certain to go under taking all of us with it. worse, we're way off the shipping lines, and no one can survive these frigid waters more than an hour. what are we going to do?"

so jfk suggests, democratically,
"my fellow survivors, the pope is the world's greatest religious leader outside of billy graham, he deserves to survive. but i'm leader of the greatest nation on earth and i haven't sent the green berets into vietnam yet and i should survive to ensure the total mucking up of history. mayor daley here leads the most powerful democratic party machine in the u.s., so he should have a chance to sire a son and start a daley dynasty. one day, a president may come from illinois. there's only one answer. let's have a vote."

"I agree," says mayor daley, "the winner stays in the boat, the other two jump into the water and take your chances.

so they voted, and mayor daley won by a thousand votes.
