Why aren't non-Veterans upset about this McCain quote?
Edited on Fri May-30-08 02:06 PM by cynatnite
McCain fired back, saying, back "I will not accept from Sen. Obama, who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform, any lectures on my regard for those who did."

http://articles.lancasteronline.com/local/4/222171

To me, McCain is being condescending and insulting to those people who chose not to serve. Not serving shouldn't be a strike against anyone and McCain acts as it is. I'm a vet and I've never looked down on anyone for not joining the military.

1. It is the chickenhawk argument
Dick Cheney can shut the fuck up now about veterans issues. McCain says so.

2. Kind of hilarious
I mean ok - it'll probably be an effective technique, but one doesn't have to remember back very far to when the Republicans were defending a guy who avoided service over a guy who served.

3. He's going to hide behind that insult b/c he has NOTHING to say
that's substantive on ANY ISSUE.

He's already repeating himself. It'll get worse.

4. I wonder if he's willing to take criticism from GWB or Cheney.
My guess is publicly yes, but privately no.

5. (shrug) It's typical, or at least common, of veterans to behave as if their opinion is all...
that matters on issues about military policy. My only gripe about vets as a category.

I just read over it now.

7. McCain is NOT your typical veteran. He is a user
that cares only for himself and to heck with his fellow vets.

11. It's really bugged me for the last couple of days...
It just felt like he was denigrating those folks who decided not to join. Weird, too, because he calls himself a champion of vets, but is against the GI Bill. McCain is such a flip-flopper to the point he needs meds.

6. I can't remember,
Did McCain condemn the Swift Boaters when they went after Kerry.

How about the folks that denigrated Al Gore's service while championing the Bush boys glorious national guard duty.

18. Don't know about Gore
Edited on Fri May-30-08 03:05 PM by Bok_Tukalo
But McCain denounced the Swiftboat ads that came out against Kerry almost immediately and called on Bush to do the same.

12. I hold the First Amendment in higher esteem than Mr. McCain
So I'll continue to hold forth on all sorts of issues despite not being a veteran. Tough titty, Straight-Talkin' Johnny Maverick.

14. I was upset by it and I agree with your sentiment
My first reaction was to think that he's suggesting I'm not qualified to have an opinion because I never served? My father and many other family members served in the military. I think that the press is unfairly pushing this theme by McCain. Have all of them served in the military? Surely this kind of thinking is the definition of elitist thinking.
