Army secretary steps down in wake of scandal at Walter Reed hospital

Harvey's departure, announced on short notice by a visibly agitated Defense Secretary Robert Gates, was the most dramatic move in an escalating removal of officials with responsibilities over one of the military's highest-profile and busiest medical facilities.

Hours earlier, President Bush ordered a comprehensive review of conditions at the nation's network of military and veteran hospitals, which has been overwhelmed by injured troops from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Gates said Harvey had resigned, but senior defense officials speaking on condition of anonymity said Gates had privately demanded that Harvey leave. Gates was displeased that the officer Harvey had chosen as interim commander of Walter Reed -- Lt. Gen. Kevin Kiley, the current Army surgeon general and a former commander of Walter Reed -- has been accused by critics of long knowing about the problems there and not improving outpatient care.

"I am disappointed that some in the Army have not adequately appreciated the seriousness of the situation pertaining to outpatient care at Walter Reed," Gates said in the Pentagon briefing room. He took no questions from reporters. MORE...

If Bush wants to really investigate he should put Max Cleland over any panel he comes up with. James Baker III, Colin Powell or some other Bush crony won't get it this time.

Supporting the troops don't mean SHOVING the wounded through the cracks!

Hypocrites and liars to a man/woman. The GOP always beats up and mistreats those who are least able to defend themselves. It's what bullies do to feel big. Bush rips the guts out of the VA budget and then brags about finding ways to cut the budget.

The dems should make Bush account for every additional penny he "Needs For Iraq" item by item...UP FRONT!

Instead of paying "GHOST EMPLOYEES" 9 billion dollars in Iraq, we need to take care of our wounded soldiers!

Bremer Paid "Ghost Employees" To Avoid "Real Trouble"

Paul Bremer told members of Congress today that he was aware that nonexistent "ghost employees" were on America's payroll when he was administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq in 2003 and 2004.

But because the real employees - who provided security for Iraqi ministries - were "74,000 armed men, it seemed a lesser risk to continue paying" everyone while trying to figure out who was actually showing up for work.

"On the streets, you'd call that protection money," remarked Congressman Danny Davis, an Illinois Democrat. When Davis asked whether any of that money had wound up in the hands of insurgents, Bremer said he didn't know. But "if we stopped paying them, my judgment was we could have real trouble."

Stuart Bowen, the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, also testified before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform today, and told the panel that the problem of ghost employees was not a major reason that $8.8 billion distributed to Iraqi ministries is unaccounted for.
