Edited on Wed Jun-11-08 01:53 PM by SoCalDem
Doesn't the whole process make it NOT a 152-yr old mansion?

Wouldn't the money be better spent BUILDING a NEW "totally green" governor's mansion?

And is it really necessary to even HAVE governor's mansions anymore?

By the time a person becomes governor these days, I'm guessing that most of them are already pretty well off and don;t really ned the "public housing"

sustainable construction & historic design are not mutually exclusive.

2. Yep - history is worth preserving
Although maybe it would be better off if it were used as a museum or public building rather than a residence.

3. Well, speaking as someone who's people have been here since the 1820's, maybe the fire
burnt the republican smell out the mansion.

I hope by the time it gets rebuilt we have a Democrat living there.

10. Gasoline @ that price not so much. Natural gas from Barnett Shale
and other areas..definitely.

Price of oil per barrel I am sure is helping the state coffers to an extent.

5. I heard Gov Perry today say that the mansion will be
rebuilt, no matter what it will cost. My daughter lives in Texas and I couldn't help but think, "Her taxes will be going up to pay for this."

7. They 're also about to be devistated by several hundred Civil rights suites.
That could easily cost them billions if they are lucky. Tens of billions if they are not.

6. If well managed,
Texas has the resources to be it's own country. They can rebuild a house.

8. there will probably be some money raised by private
groups, historical preservation groups mostly likely.

the official residence is sort of like that state's 'White House' and is used for many official functions. It should be restored, too much a part of Texas history,

At least all the furnishings were elsewhere. That would be the truly irreplaceable stuff
