Teens sleeping in Danville street are run over by car
From the Associated Press
3:02 PM PDT, June 13, 2008

DANVILLE, Calif. -- Two Danville teens are recovering from injuries they sustained when they were run over by a car after falling asleep on the street.

The 15-year-old boys were trapped under the car for some time, but managed to escape with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say one boy had a punctured lung and a broken bone, and the other had cuts and scrapes.

The two told authorities that they were star-gazing early Friday morning and fell asleep while lying on a blanket in the middle of the street on a cul de sac. Shortly before 3:30 a.m., a woman delivering newspapers for the San Francisco Chronicle apparently didn't see the boys and drove over them in her Nissan Sentra.

Police Sgt. Phillip Wisotsky said the incident was under investigation. He said it's illegal to sleep in the street.

2. Yeah but no need to prosecute them jeez
I think getting run over will scar them sufficiently that they don't do it again.

7. But was it their CRIMINAL INTENT to sleep in the street?
Yes, they were careless and stupid, but they hardly criminal. I think paying their medical bills is punishment enough.

8. More: 'an investigation is under way "as to who is at fault'
I'd imagine an investigation is needed to protect the driver from lawsuits:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/06/13/BAM8118R08.DTL&tsp=1

The incident occurred at 3:24 a.m. on Ashland Court. The driver, who delivers The Chronicle and other newspapers on the cul de sac, drove over the teens as she was leaving, apparently not seeing them.

Wisotsky said an investigation is under way "as to who is at fault. It is illegal to lay in the street. It is a public roadway and people aren't supposed to sleep on it."
