Cindy responds to DU ers
Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 03:18 AM by proud2Blib
These are Cindy Sheehan's responses to DUers from this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x34214

DUers comments are in italics.

Her job is essentially to be a professional protester.

How many of us are funded to do all these things? I have spent tens of thousands of my own dollars in my activities for peace. I would like to know who funds me so I can stop spending my own money.

I think not.No praise for Dem bashers.Sorry.I used to support her. I even marched with her but no longer. She doesn't support us so she has lost my allegiance. She should work with us instead of against us to end the war. What she does now id counterproductive and self promoting.

It's okay to bash the Repubs who got us into this war, but not the Dems who got us into this war? I think people dying by the hundreds daily transcends politics. Sorry that you are tied more to political parties than peace. I am more for peace. I think what we did at the Emmanuel press conference caused a huge re-thinking of the Democratic leadership. I guess people didn't believe me when I said that this peace struggle is not about politics to me. The leftwing is just as shocked as the rightwing.

I think not.No praise for Dem bashers.Sorry.I used to support her.

And as she isn't a Dem she can say what she likes but bashing the only party that will end the war is not productive! And s a loyal Dem, I won't quietly tolerate her attempting to influence our primaries. Our choice is none of her business! I support ending the war but not her current tactics.

Actually, I am a registered Democrat. I find a lot of Democrats admirable and will support Dennis Kucinich. I agree. You can vote for whomever you want. If you want to support hawkish-war mongers that is your choice. I won't support any pro-war candidates no matter what party they claim to belong to.

like her. But many people don't need to be lead on this issue.

She, in fact, does not lead those who follow their own minds and hearts whether it is popular or not.

I like her, but regard her as a media creation, something that she will use to further the movement, fine, but if those others hadn't been out there long before the rest of us and our inflated notions of our own importance, there wouldn't be anything for Cindy to, ahmmmm, "lead".

I only claim to speak for myself...I honor the people who have been marching and working for peace for a lot longer than I have. I, in fact, have many heroes and sheroes that have been my mentors. I do what I think it right every day. If people choose to follow me, that is their choice. I don't ask anyone to follow me. I believe everyone should follow their hearts. Has anyone heard me say: follow me? I don't think so. I work everyday for peace, whether the media is covering me, or not. It's about stopping the killing for me, folks...plain and simple. I will work until people aren't dying in illegal wars anymore. Sorry if that offends some people, but I don't want my grandchildren's generation to be doing this all over again. It's selfish, but I already lost one person who was my heart and soul....no more! PS: Love u too!

Sorry folks, I'm just not given to hero worship. And, though I'm not
much of an activist myself, I have personally known people who organized and lead public anti-War/Nuclear Freeze events in Topeka, Kansas as far back as the late 70s. It's a little hard to see them discounted by over-simplified portraits of one very fine woman.

Please, don't anyone worship me...I am not worthy of that. No human being is. We are all humans doing our parts...we all have our parts. I honor you all for your efforts.

I thank DUers for your support...support for me is support for peace and justice. My success is our success.

War is our common enemy...let's struggle against that and the people who support war, violence and killing, and not each other.

Love and peace
Cindy

Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 04:32 AM by BlueIris
this for a while now, and I probably still will, but since either you or your associates may be "here" with us at the moment, there's something I want to tell you. With all due respect, and with the caveat that I have never suffered a loss like the one you have: I hope you will consider slowing down a little. Find some personal time for yourself, and try to build a life that is a little more balanced. My sense is that there is great imbalance in your life at this time, which isn't good for anyone. It's very important that you at least try for greater balance, so that you can be as healthy as you can for as long as you can. And continued best of luck with your everything.

21. With all due respect, knowing you meant the best -- I find your 'advice' presumptuous
Granted your caveat that you have never suffered a loss like the one she has is exactly the caveat that renders your advice just a tad insulting.

It hasn't even been three years since she lost Casey. I remember such well meaning people coming by and giving me and my mother such helpful advice as if losing my brother was something akin to a break up and it was time for us to just move on. And you just want to reach out and slap them.

You don't understand, but I know you meant the best and I guess that's the important thing. But you have to understand that doing this for Casey is probably one of few things she's found that helps it all have some sort of meaning or purpose. What she's doing is probably more therapeutic for her than any time-out for herself. She's a mother after all.

(And if Cindy happens to read this, I apologize for responding for you, as I was really responding for myself and my experience with loss.)

22. Thank You For This KD As Someone Who Nearly Lost A Son In Iraq
I found the aforementioned advice presumptuous almost bordering on offensive. I can not even begin to understand the grief of losing Casey; but I do understand that Cindy's valiant and noble effort to stop the war in Iraq is the ONE thing, the BEST thing, she can to do to heal, (if that is even possible) and to stay as close to her baby as possible.

When I found Cindy was going to be in Crawford the summer of 2005 I donated a tent and fans and coolers for the month; my family gave up our summer vacation to do this for Cindy, Casey ,and all their supporters, we did it because it was so important for Cindy to be there and we loved her so much because our Ben was getting ready to ship out to Ramadi the following month and we were so afraid he would be killed, and Cindy was in Texas fighting for his LIFE! And the lives of all our children who have been to that hell on earth.

Ben was almost killed on October 8th 2005, just a few weeks after being in Ramadi, the guy next to him died, Sergio Escobar aged 18. RIP Sergio. Ben was seriously wounded but he is as healthy as a horse and he has healed, too well I am afraid, and now he is going back to Ramadi in April. Ben's best friend in the entire world was killed in February 2006 just a few weeks before the 3/7 was to come back to 29 Palms CA, Ben feels he MUST go back to fight for Vanalstine, RIP V  and I can't convince him otherwise. I have cried and tried to plead with him to not go back to no avail. He is going and I am frantic and so afraid he will not be so lucky this time, so I continue to love and support Cindy, and I would never presume to give her advice about how to deal with the loss of her beautiful boy, and I hope to God I never have to fully understand what she must be feeling. Every moment of everyday.

Peace, Love, Light, Forever To Cindy.
Binka

proud2Blib for posting Cindy's responses.

I saw the thread mentioned. I have a hard time understanding why anyone would try or want to dictate what Cindy does.
THIS IS STILL AMERICA. She and everyone else STILL has the right to Free Speech.
Yet, people who are pro peace can be as vicious as the other side.....

Maybe living through the 60 & 70's and seeing the ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT against Vietnam makes for a different perspective.

Maybe knowing firsthand how losing a child (due to stupidity and arrogance) affects people, gives me a very clear perspective.

30. I apoligize for not realising that Cindy is a registered Democrat.
Many on DU stated she was not so I believed the allegation. But to me her making it difficult for the Democrats to do whatever is in their power to end this war is not productive. We cannot toss out every candidate who voted to give the President the power to go to war as a last resort. They were misinformed and we were guessing, which is easy to do with no info.I despise this war and have protested it and have literally walked at Cindy's side but denigrating the only party that can help to bring this to a close is not the way to go.And as Cindy is not a "professional protestor", she has also taken some missteps with the press. I forgive her for her lack of savvy but she doesn't seem to forgive anyone else. The riduculousness of promoting Dennis Kucinich is NOT pragmatic. He will never be elected. And the abrasiveness of the movement is staring to wear thin.It we may well be that the only people who will solve this are those who reach out to the Republicans but that doesn't mean voting for the GOP..

46. well...
I'm sick and tired of people saying that Kucinich is "a great candidate, but he'll never get elected". Have you heard the man speak in Congress. He's by far the sharpest tack in the bunch. Is it because he's short? What, you're following Rush's lead and calling him kooky? It's a pathetic statement to say that American's can't choose a leader unless he's somewhat handsome and over 5'6". Policy-wise the man is on point 100% of the time. The M$M's perception management campaign against him has apparently worked on you and a number of other DUers.

solve this? What the heck does that mean? Reaching out to the republicans?... only if they're handing in resignation papers.

I applaud Cindy's efforts, even if i wouldn't choose to go about things in exactly the same way were i in her shoes.

Do you suppose the Senate would even be considering any sort of Resolution to "stop the surge" had it not been for the vocal outcry started by CodePink, UFPJ, and Cindy?

Cindy works harder for our men & women in uniform than anyone in the halls of Congress (cept maybe Murtha)... she deserves praise, not constant wriggly doubt.

Sorry, not blowing up at you, just the negativity...

70. What we are dealing with now is the most horrendously
evil act in our country's history.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I personally think we should ALL be in the streets EVERY god damned day until this madness ends. Cindy is. I refuse to criticize that because I am not.

I also don't care at all if she has made missteps with the media. She is not Brittany Spears and photo ops are not the be all and end all for her or for our movement.

are the ONLY hope of ending the war. That is what I mean as counter productive. We don't need another bunch of Nader voters or third party voters costing us an election because the Dems are painted as "not good enough".
And I do criticize because I have been in the streets and have marched against every war since and including Vietnam. And I agree that the Sheehan photo ops are not the be all and end all of the movement.Unfortunately they play badly with mainstream America and those are the votes we need.

because someone might be listening :)

Actually, I have had nothing but praise for Sheehan and her continued crusade despite the arrows and brickbats she has had to endure have only increased my respect.

The only regret about me learning about Sheehan is that it has forced me to lose some respect for another anti-war advocate, Scott Ritter, who blasted her in one interview saying she somehow doesn't have the same rights as a combat veteran to do what she's doing. Shame, I used to admire him, now I'm just suspicious.

When I read those "I won't support Dem bashers..." I'm dumbstruck. That sounds like what Republicans do and why we're in the mess we're in now. I will hold ALL politicians accountable for their actions/votes regardless of the letter in front of their name.

I can't wait to see Cindy in LA on Saturday. (On edit...oops, I guess that's Friday night...)

49. Brava Cindy!
You have my unending admiration for what you've done for the country and the struggle to end the killing.

As the Mom of a son who will turn 18 in April, I cannot imagine how I would feel, were I to experience such a loss as you.

What I do know is that I would be far too bitter, and blinded by my hatred of George W. Bush, to be able to turn my grief into anything noble or positive, the way you have.

It doesn't matter who agrees or disagrees with what you do. Your beloved Casey died believing he was defending your right to do it. I, for one, will NEVER disrespect that.

Peace to you always, Cindy, and my sincere thanks.

50. I think Cindy should shut up now that the war is over and no one is dying anymore.
EXTREME :sarcasm:

Man, I get tired of the anti-Cindy Sheehan warmed-over Repuke talking-points sh*t.

My favorite: "Cindy doesn't speak for me." Um, I don't recall her ever saying she spoke for anyone other than herself.

Is she open to critique and criticism? Of course she is. Everyone and everything they do is open to discussion and consideration and judgment and criticism. I just never see any valid critique of her.

That post that got 20 or so recommendations a couple of weeks ago ending with something to the effect of "there are other things I could tell you about but I won't go into it here." Pathetic. Disgusting. Invalid argument technique - would make Joe McCarthy proud. And it got 20+ recs. Oh, brother.

Unfortunately, I can't see you in person in DC, but I'll be part of the protests in Denver. Getting out there and demanding an end to the war is the best way to thank you for all the work you've done. You put up with far more crap than I'm capable of - on top of losing your son, you have to deal with a large number of people who say and do incredibly hateful things.

Don't ever say that working for peace is selfish - everything you do is incredibly selfless. I have multiple friends in the military, some serving in Iraq as we speak, and I want to see them home alive and in one piece.

Fortunately, Cindy responded with grace and eloquence to those critics, and I agree wholeheartedly with her. It is OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CRITICIZE OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES, regardless of party affiliation.! (Yes, I'm shouting!) This is about an unjust war and the idiots who initially supported it. This is about getting the hell out of Iraq. THis is about the shocking lack of urgency to take action by Congress, including members of the Democratic party. Cindy is not a role model to be emulated or worshipped. She'll be the first person to tell you that. She's a grieving mom who is trying to make our elected officials accountable for their actions.

65. I think her attitude to supporting Democrats is short-sighted in the extreme.
When you vote in America, you're effectively voting not for a candidate but for a party of government.

Even if the specific Democrat who wins the primaries is "hawkish" (although there is, I think, no possibility that the Democrat won't be far more dovish than the Republican) then voting for them will still help bring in a dovish party of government.

I believe her when she says she's "not about politics".

I regard this as a weakness, not a strength.

79. I think it's naive to believe
that Democrats will be the party of peace without pressure from people like Cindy Sheehan. It was Johnson who escalated Vietnam, it was many Democrats who helped make this war happen from the start, and it was Rahm who tried to claim the last election was not a mandate to end the war.

Many Democrats won't oppose the war unless they feel it is politically safe to do so, and pressure from anti-war groups helps make it more politically appealing to them. I did notice the Democratic leadership change their tune after Cindy's action against Rahm. It worked well. Cindy is doing exactly what she needs to do to reach her goals.

74. Cindy and the war
It's good that Cindy is out there amongst many others. She draws attention which is good.

However while citizns want the soldiers to come home we must focus on the issues below at the same time to bring lasting and practical change to government.

Middle Class can and should take absolute control of our government for the middle class is the most powerful influence on the USA planet. Remember the wealthy are only 1% of the population so middle class rules with votes. A change in voting and financing of elections is the only way. Elected officials do not want change. USA citizens NEED change!
Frankly I want a 50% reduction in the Pentagon Budget and do away with that new monster Homeland Security for it is not necesary and invades our privacy.

We the people demand these issues be placed on the 2008 presidential ballot:

http://www.publicampaign.org/
National Healthcare for All

""Ironically, few Americans understand that a relatively small number of consumers, roughly 5 to 10 million have the economic power to severely damage the American and global economy. Spending cutbacks could be become contagious. Leaving out the working poor with little discretionary spending, the amount of discretionary spending by millions of middle class Americans with ample disposable income is sufficient to threaten economic growth and the economy. A major reason is that there is a large "multiplier" associated with consumer spending, meaning that every dollar spent has a large ripple or cumulative impact through various sectors of the economy. One person's spending is another's (actually many others') income. The multiplier can range from four to six. For example, cut consumer spending by $250 billion and it can easily reduce the national GDP by $1 trillion. If the middle class does not soon use its consumer spending power, it will surely lose it as its discretionary income evaporates, because the war against will be won by the Upper Class.

Economic civil disobedience for the foreseeable future has much more power to change our nation for the better than the political act of non-voting. The goal of the economic strategy is to obtain enough reforms and improvements in the political system to restore the effectiveness of voting at some later time. Now, in our perverse society, dollars are more powerful agents of change than votes. In truth, as has been evident for many years, we cannot vote ourselves out of a corrupt, oppressive and delusional democracy that uses military and economic weapons of mass devastation on a global scale for the benefit of elites, while pretending to be the world's best democracy. The truth of all this defines the case for a populist Second American Revolution. We must motivate some millions of Americans that are so fed up with current conditions that they will eagerly join a loose network of American Insurgents for Democracy, not fighting with weapons in the streets, but by withholding their dollars from the economy.""

89. Hmmmmm
While I am certainly not in a position to tell a Mother how to grieve, or an activist how to protest, I want to give a bit of feedback on this one remark as I find this is an example of what some take issue with.

It's okay to bash the Repubs who got us into this war, but not the Dems who got us into this war?

Respectfully, I would say the following to any DU-er -

Bush got us into this war. Most, if not all Democrats would have handled the "authority" differently. I have no problem holding Democrats accountable for trusting the fool - but one should be wary of using a broad brush when over 130 DEMOCRATS voted against this war. This, in the climate of lies and fear after 911. These Democrats deserve our continued recognition. Dennis Kucinich was just ONE of those who voted "no."

Cindy is a great women, a brave women, and I want to see her remain credible and effective. I think she can do that best by making "peace" with those in a position to help? I fear she will lose the ear of those who share our goal of ending the war if rhetoric replaces reason/diplomacy. I hope she'll work with James Webb and Jack Murtha (for example) who are not only sympathetic, but are in a noted position to act on what we all desire. It is possible she has attempted to work with some of these people, and feels that she's not being heard?

For the record -

The six Republicans who voted against the rez are as follows:

(Just a change up)

In celebration of 1000 thousand posts I can not think of a better thread.

I remember the first night, in the morning when she was down in Crawford, or at least the first night of rumor that they were going to come and take her away. You come a long way Ms. sheehan, you just keep doin'. This charade will end some day and when it does you will have saved lives. Someday may we all have a beer and a laugh and a cry together.

And for those who criticize her BACK OFF! If anyone here has the right to SPEAK THE LOUDEST IT IS A GOLDSTAR MOM

From a BlueStar Father who thanked God everyday he did not have to change his SONS STAR to gold while he spent two tours of duty in Iraq based on the lies of the EVIL Bush Administration!

October 17, 2006,Will be remembered as the Enabling day of the 21st Century!
"The government will make use of these powers only insofar as they are essential for carrying out vitally necessary measures..."
~Adolf Hitler, March 23, 1933, before the German Parliament (Reichstag) as he urged them to pass his "Enabling Act"

what she does is her own way, on her own terms and I fully respect her.

God Bless you, Ms. Sheehan, best wishes.
