Good old, American can-do spirit!
I'm watching the TV and I see this weird-ass, old-fuck Texan T. Boone Shithead (or whatever)

mumble something about alternative energy and not being dependent on foreign oil and how he is so certain American can do it.

Then it struck me.

On Monday (July 7, 2008) I asked the greater DU community What is preventing the U.S. from getting Universal Healthcare?

The poll generated some discussion about which industry may be preventing a move forward for the country in terms of health care by highlighting who would have the most to lose.

But the most interesting part of the poll was which choice was not voted on. of the 138 votes (at the time of this posting) no one thought it was too complicated to switch from the system we have now to universal healthcare.

No one. Not. One. Vote.

FULL DISCLOSURE: four people did choose "America doesn't need Universal Healthcare"

And I'm thinking, "Why is it that the republicans can see a way out of a dependency on foreign oil, but cannot figure out how to make universal healthcare work?"

What is the sticky widget here?

Anyone know why it is the GOP believe only independence from foreign oil (and not Universal healthcare) is possible or even worth trying to achieve?

15. Just to be clear...
Here is where I get the majority of my pictures.

It is like an endless supply that I can choose from and add to.

If I don't have a picture of Shithead Pickens, it's because I don't care to have one.

3. The Insurance Companies..
what a racket they have going. They bet the odds, and when the odds aren't in their favor, they just deny coverage, or stop selling certain types of insurance.

9. I think it is industry driven..
I may be nutso, but I believe that the large stock holders in the energy sector are already deeply invested in alternatives. Why roll out the new product when you're making so much money off of the old one? And then, when the new product does come out it will be cost prohibitive so they can still make money off both, and one pays for the other.

10. But, why is only one industry willing/able to drive this big a change?
I follow what you're saying, and to a certain extent agree with it. But, part of my doesn't want to understand an industry (or corporation's) explanation for something.

I just don't see how the GOP can say alternative energy is possible, and say Universal healthcare isn't and no one is calling them on it.

16. but no one calls them on anything..
and if they do, it is heard like a tree falling in the forest. I think about Ralph Nader going up against the auto industry way back when, and I'm sure no one could do that today. Look at Michael Moore. Not only does the bell ringer get ostracized by the industry, they also get vilified by the consumer! Because of the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly. The energy sector knew this was coming, and will make their money both ways. With the price of oil the R&D is already paid for. And I bet when they phase out of the oil industry, Exxon Mobil will claim bankruptcy because all the big investors will have already gotten out.

7. Best yet is the mail
order pharms who 'decide' what drugs you get regardless of what the doc says - even if he preauthorizes the drug only to have some minimum wage overseas call center flunkie say no. Had my doc call 3x only to be told no by a different person each time. He even asked for a medical professional and was told no one was available to answer his questions...but the flunkie wouldn't approve the meds. (and no, believe it or not, they weren't reading off a script) Talk about pissed. Bottom line, my doc gave me samples of what he wanted me to take.

Best is this - I am on a long term med and each time I get it re-filled, it's different 'generic.' Problem is, I also have a chemistry degree and I KNOW they are different - so where is the benefit of the med? There isn't. I am going back to holistic treatments. I am quite literally sickened by the pharm and insurance companies.

But then again, I am just a 'little people' so can't win. BUT I bet my next check our Congress gets what their docs prescribe with no questions asked.

8. I heard something like that on the radio too.
Some financial guy saying it was america's can-do attitude that will prevail.

It was the can do attitude that killed over 100,000 innocent japanese too.

11. It was that can-do spirit that sent a man to the moon, too.
The GOP says we can do one, but not the other.

I just don't understand why.

17. Excuse me...
...The Moon Landing was the biggest production of its day.

That they were able to pull it off and make it look realistic is the epitome of America's can-do spirit.

Let's see your extra-orbital production then?
