It just makes me feel better knowing that some people out there care enough to put their name on a piece of paper. I know it isn't much.

Honestly, I'm surprised it's taking this long to get 250,000 signatures. I would have thought 2 million would have been easy to obtain.

What the hell is wrong with Americans? Are they really that clueless?

30. No, I think demoralization, disempowerment, and--above all--disenfranchisement
Edited on Thu Jul-17-08 01:52 PM by Peace Patriot
are much bigger factors in the lack of rebellion here, than cluelessness. Don't forget that a whopping 70% of the American people oppose the Iraq War and want it ended; they vote, and Congress does the opposite. Repeated thwartings of the will of the people, like this, can take their toll. And when the thwarting is inflicted by both Democrats and Republicans, and even the peoples' antiwar candidate merely wants to shift the endless war from Iraq (now that the oil contracts are signed) to Afghanistan/Pakistan (pipelines, heroine routes, China--or just more war booty--hard to say), you can understand why people stop signing petitions.

Our 'Democratic' Congress now has a worse approval rating than Bush/Cheney! (Bush/Cheney hitting 20%-25%; the 'Democrats' hitting bottom--SINGLE DIGIT approval!) The people who are clueless are not ordinary Americans. The truly clueless are our 'Democratic' Congress members who keep thinking that 'holding hearings' is going to fool anybody. Or maybe they just don't give a fuck, any more than the Bushites do. It's such a painful spectacle seeing this charade in Washington DC, that I sometimes think, why don't they just shut down Congress, and go spend their fat salaries and war lobbyists' payoff's and boost the economy a little? They'd be doing more good.

Knowing what I know about the vote 'counting' system in this country--which was THE fascist coup d'etat--I did not expect much from the 06 (s)elections. But I have to say that I've been shocked by just how bad it is--how completely unrepresentative Congress still is, of the American people, and the outrageous things they've done, in total defiance of our will and seriously destructive of our interests. Newt Gingrich could not have have done worse.

'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY vote 'counting'--with the code owned and controlled by rightwing Bushite corporations--has been much more lethal to our democracy than even I understood. It is not just the White House that is completely deaf to the American people. It is not just the Supreme Court, which crowned Bush as emperor in the first place. And it is not just the war profiteering corporate 'news' monopolies. Our own alleged 'Democratic' office holders are also completely deaf to us, and they may be worse, in that they fool some people with their little 'opposition' two-step. Not many, though. Something like 90% of the people in this country think they are fuckwads, too, along with Bush/Cheney.

You wonder why they don't sign petitions? That's why.

Having said all that, I'm going to sign it--and I urge everyone else to do so. We must continue to exercise whatever rights as citizens we still have, even if it seems fruitless--if for no other reason than to remind ourselves that we DO have the right to petition our government. Because we might forget.

But I urge you also to realize that there is hardly a member of Congress who can prove that he or she was actually elected, and this is the heart of the problem: The coup of non-transparent vote 'counting' with 'TRADE SECRET' code. And get on it, friends! Don't just do petitions. Fix the main problem. State/local venues are the most feasible:

39. "demoralization, disempowerment, and--above all--disenfranchisement"
Some of the standard tools of negativity. Don't think for a minute that the CIA-related BushCo haven't been purposefully using these tools to the maximum that they are able, for years and years. That the Republican Noise Machine puts out pure lies intended to dissuade thought and research or at minimum to blot out the truth through sheer volume and overwhelm...that's just one angle.

The pendulum aspect, of course, is that people will figure out what is going on and take back their power.

50. Thank you. TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY vote counting: a voice from Georgia.
I want my vote back, dammit. I cannot describe the horrible feeling that washed over me when I first walked into a polling place filled with those damned machines. I was voting in the boonies in 2002, and I'd never seen a LINE before. That vote resonated with people here, and the majority of the people who showed up at the polls that year were not the ones who got represented by the vote.

There was some grumbling going on about the machines, and I finally decided to be the designated (polite) asshole and start asking questions. "Who provided these machines? Are you sure they work accurately? How do you know? What do you do if they break down? Do you know how to troubleshoot problems? There's no ballot - if there's a problem and the votes get erased -maybe in a power outage - how can you have a recount? The data cards seem to get re-used and passed around instead of being stored after a vote. I don't get to lock my card in a box. Why not? Oh, the vote is in the machine, not on the card? Wait a minute. That's not right."

I got the most condescending "trust the machine" BS lecture while most everyone around me stared at the poll worker in disbelief. These were my neighbors in line with me; they weren't embarrassed about ME or my questions. I know, because I talked to many of them later, most if not all were thinking the same thing I was thinking:

SHIT. This is not good. How did this happen?

Michael Collins: Election Fraud & Tyranny: Part 1
http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0807/S00133.htm

Look for the subheading: Barnes, Cleland and Their Stunning "Losses"

Yep, and we all get to re-experience that cold, screwed-over feeling every time we vote.

OH MIGHTY DNC, bring that 50 state strategy to my 'red' state! It's kinda nice getting a nod after being ignored for so long, but I wish the party would stop wasting their pretend effort here. Spend all the election money you like - you're wasting your time and money (and MINE) and the machines will screw us all every time.

I love Dean, I do. I am so excited that Obama is going to bother to campaign in my state. But, guys, if you don't get rid of the machines, it's all just a dog and pony show. I can call and write my reps all I like, but they don't have to give a damn about my opinion or my needs if I can't actually vote them out when they kiss Republican ass screw up.

And that's a stone cold fact.

Read this and you will never vote on another electronic voting machine in your life:

Sure I will, because no amount of complaining has gotten rid of them yet. I have NO OTHER CHOICE. How do you get the crooks in office to change the system when it is that same system that rewarded them? Especially since restoration of a real vote would see many of them (including the useless yes-man Saxby Chambliss) tossed out on their asses...

I like Wexler a LOT and believe in his cause, gratefully thank him and hope for the best for his effort. He's bothering to try, he's bothering to support Kucinich, and I respect all of that. Signed.
