When the carnival artist draws a caricature of you, they put you in some setting that is YOU. The caricature is suppose to be an exaggeration of YOU.

Not an exaggeration of untrue things your worst enemies believe of you.

In the case of the New Yorker it was a satire not of the Obamas but of how they are portrayed.
